In addition to its aesthetic and community benefits, the project will significantly enhance stormwater mitigation. An underground detention system—capable of holding up to 440,000 gallons of water (roughly the size of an eight-lane college swimming pool)—will temporarily store and gradually release stormwater into the city’s drainage system. This improvement will help reduce strain on local infrastructure during heavy rain events and lower the risk of localized flooding.
Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20, 2026, with completion anticipated in spring 2027.
During construction, there will be impacts to transportation routes, parking availability, and nearby operations. As part of our continued efforts to address parking availability concerns, individuals who normally park between Newcomb and the Berger Family Lawn should contact parking services for alternative options if they encounter any difficulties parking on campus.
