News That Rocks

What an Amazing Year!

We started the year 2021 with high hopes for a year that would get us back to a more *normal* way of life here at School of Rock Silver Spring and we ended up finding our *new normal*.  We welcomed so many students to our in person programs and although behind a mask it was AWESOME to hear them playing live in our halls again!  Our Performance Program bands got to play amazing shows at live venues again including The Renegade, Silver Branch Brewing Co., The Pie Shop and Glen Echo Park. We even had a fantastic summer camp season with weekly shows at 3 Stars Brewing Co. And we got our adults back in the rehearsal room with our Adult Rock 101 Program that is thriving to the point where we need to add an Adult Performance Program. Our Rookies Program student roster swelled and we introduced a Rock 101 Lab class for our older beginners to prep them for the preformance program. We welcomed a new Music Director - Brooks Owens - when Neel stepped down and have added more teachers. Every day we are contacted by people who are interested in learning an instrument or are interested in connecting with other people who want to play music.  It is so exciting to be a part of a growing school (so much so that we are opening on Saturdays starting in February.  This year we learned how important our SOR community is and how Together kindness and generosity and patience are at core of the people we call our School of Rock Family. We truly thank you for taking part in 2021 here at SoR.   Let's  keep Rocking into 2022.

Happy New Year!

We're Going Online the First Week Back in January - Safety Is Still Our Top Priority

Our first week back from Holiday break will be virtual so that those who have traveled for the holidays can moniter their symptoms.  Creating a COVID-19 safe environment has been and remains our #1 priority for students and staff when they are in the building.  We know that many of our students just want to come in person and we are doing all the safety protocols to ensure we are providing a safe environment to rock.  We appreciate your communication of possible exposures and illness as well as staying home when necessary.
  • We require masks while in the building
  • All persons entering the school are given a symptom and temperature check
  • All persons entering the school immediately wash their hands and hand sanitizer is used frequently
  • We monitor to maintain social distancing
  • We have barriers between vocalists and the band in our groups and a barrier is in all lessons
  • We disinfect all high touch surfaces with hospital grade disinfectant using a special misting tool that gets in every crevice, nook and cranny, and disinfect cases that our brought in by students when they arrive.
  • We ask that anyone with symptoms please stay home until you are well and we will follow all CDC guidelines

In other words, we're serious about safety!
Adult Performance Program is coming in the New Year!

We are excited that so may of our adult students are interested in a performance program like the one we have for our younger students. It's not too late for you to express interest in joining. Sign up info will be sent out in late January and Saturday afternoon rehearsals will begin mid February with Show Director Jaime.  This first seaon will be Mix Tape themed with a variety of artist in the set list.  If you have been considering joining in on the fun they are having in the Adult Rock 101 or would like to be added to the contact list for the Adult Performance Program sign up email, contact Rose on the School line 301-589-7625.

House Band at Omega Studios

In December, some of our House Band members had the opportunity to record a song from their set at Omega Recording Studios in Rockville. Omega is a world class studio that has not only recorded countless artists and bands but also has a teaching program for recording and audio production. Our House Band was lucky enough to sit in as the band for a session in a professional recording studio environment and absolutely crushed it!
Inclement Weather

We saw our first flurries in Silver Spring this week!  If you take your lesson in person or have a group that rehearses in person, please take note of how we will handle things.
On the day in question, we will determine if our staff can come in and return home safely, particularly for groups.  Often the timing of the storm allows us to continue our in person operations.  If you feel the roads are not safe and we are open, you may opt to take your in person lesson online for that day, just let us know.  We will post up on our FB  page if there's a closure and send an email if there are any changes to the in person groups on that day by 1PM.  If you have a question shoot us an email, check our programs site, social media, or give us a call before you head out.

Show Rehearsals are Clicking!

Our performance groups will be meeting virtually for the first week of the new year. Show directors will give a briefing on the things everyone should be focusing on in their practice time at home so that they can make the most of their last few rehearsals before the the shows set for the first two Saturdays in February.  Each of the performance program groups will have a make up rehearsal on Saturday, January 15th.  Details will be sent in a Pike 13 note and be talked about in the virtual check in the first week back from break. The first rehearsals of the new year should help the groups get back on track after break and build momentum. Our Show Directors Brooks, Jeff and Neel were all excited to report that before break things were really clicking into place. We can't wait to see The Beatles, Thin Lizzy and John Mayer & Co. give it all they've got on stage next month.  For a sneak peek, check out our instagram and facebook posts (click to like and follow at the bottom of this newsletter).  Stay tuned for updated rehearsal schedules and show time announcements for next month.
THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with our Music Director -  Brooks
PERFORMANCE READY - How do you know when a song is "finished" or ready to perform on stage for an audience? The goal is to never walk on stage with any questions or doubts about the song. Knowing the form and the transitions is crucial, but filling in the details of the song to make it sound full and complete will be what puts it over the top and make it ready for the stage. It's almost impossible to put on a high quality performance if you're feeling uneasy about your part. When you're on stage, let your focus be on the moment and the performance! Talk to your instructor and show directors this month about how to prepare your songs for a great performance at the show.

Give the Gift of Music!

Looking for a gift that rocks?  The holidays are over but it's never the wrong time to give a gift certificate for lessons or programs at School of Rock - they are good for any program throughout the year. Birthdays, Graduations, other mile stones met.  When the grandparents ask what to get, send them to our handy online gift  certificates where they can choose an amount, a program or a summer camp!  It's super easy!
