The Holiday Season is Upon Us
Before we know it, one holiday after another will be here. It's the time of year when garbage and recycling areas at multifamily communities are pushed to the limits (and sometimes beyond), and inclement weather can create further chaos. Now is the time to start preparing for the hectic holiday season.
In this edition, we will provide some general reminders, hints, and tips to help facilitate a greener, more manageable holiday time.
Do you manage communities outside of Clackamas County? See our list of regional multifamily contacts throughout the tri-county area who are ready to help with your waste prevention, reuse, and recycling efforts.
Green Gift Giving

The holidays tend to create a lot of waste: out-with-the-old,-in-with-the-new, excess food, gift wrapping, etc. But it doesn't have to be this way. All it takes is some forethought and a commitment to green gifting. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Shop Smart
Consider regifting something you have that someone else would appreciate more. Perhaps there is nothing in your home to make the cut, but what about secondhand options through neighborhood apps like OfferUp, BuyNothing Groups, Facebook Marketplace or others? Or neighborhood thrift stores?
Gift experiences. Bowling, arcades, movie theater, or something special like OMSI or an art gallery all give the gift of something fun to do AND time spent with the ones you love. A used book exchange or clothing swap can add to the experience by adding a new-to-you item(s) to take home!
DIY Gifts
Add some extra love to your gifts by gifting something handmade. From a hand-written note to homemade sweets to a DIY coupon book (massage, favorite meal, trip to the zoo, etc.), handmade gifts can be thoughtful and intentional.
Crafty? Knit a scarf. Create wall art. Frame a photo you took of a favorite memory from the year.
Resourceful? Repair a broken toy. Make and gift lip balm, candles, green cleaning products, and more. YouTube is a great resource!
Green Gift Wrap
Too often, gift wrap falls into the use-it-and-lose-it, single-use category. Challenge yourself to get more life out of gift wrap:
Be sure to save bows, gift boxes, and ribbon for future gifts. There's no reason they can't be reused.
Rather than using single-use gift wrap, consider making the gift wrap part of the gift (e.g. dish towel) or use colorful magazine pages or reusable bags (store-bought or stitch your own with a drawstring to use over and over).
In the end, what can't be reused or repurposed should be recycled or disposed of properly. Be sure to check out the next article to learn how!

Holiday Recycling

After gifts are exchanged, and the festivities are winding down, there are still decisions to be made. To recycle or not.
To be a good recycler, one must throw items in the trash. Afterall, not all items can be recycled in our home recycle bins. Watch the video below and/or visit Clackamas County's Holiday Disposal and Sustainability Guide for details on holiday recycling.

Plan for Holiday Collection Service Needs
Don't let the holiday waste and recycling overwhelm your community: Plan ahead.
Trees
Have a plan and communicate it to residents. Whether you identify a spot for residents to place trees and have your garbage company or landscaper haul away or coordinate with a scout troop to pick them up, make sure your residents know what to do. No time to coordinate? Give your residents options to dispose of trees and wreaths on their own.
Garbage/Recycling Service
Get ahead of the problem and set up an extra collection (for a fee) with your garbage/recycling company. If you have a compactor, consider having it emptied ahead of the holiday weekend.
Reduce & Reuse
This is also an opportunity to remind residents the benefits of reducing and reusing now and throughout the new year. Share our Green Gift Giving article (above) or other ways to reduce and reuse, and then recycle. Go the extra step and consider coordinating a book, toy, or clothing swap among residents!
Inclement Weather Reminder

With the holiday season comes the inclement weather season.
As a reminder, snow and ice may impact garbage and recycling collection over the coming months. When this happens, garbage/recycling companies may postpone service until it is safe to do so. In the unfortunate circumstance that they are unable to collect before your next scheduled collection day, the cumulative amount of the current subscribed service will be collected.
And remember, just becasue your road may be clear, doesn't mean the roads to get to your are clear. Safety is the top priority, especially when talking about large, heavy trucks.
For more information, visit the county's inclement weather policy webpage.
