News That Rocks

Happy Holidays!

The countdown to 2021 is here!  Whew!  We've been rocking the halls, we've got some awesome new team members, and the good cheer is abundant. Grab a mug of your favorite warm beverage and check it all out!

Meet Our New Studio Manager Rose Barber

We could not be happier to introduce Rose to our School of Rock Community!
Rose comes to us from the restaurant industry where she oversaw the finanical operations for a chain of venues for a local group here in DC for the past 7 years.  She brings with her some super operational skills that are perfect for our school including experience in working with kids and parents in a previous job at The Field School.  Rose's father and two brothers are professional musicians and she is so happy to be able to participate in helping to grow the next generation of young musicians.  We are very fortunate to have someone of her heart, humor, commitment and caliber join our team and we know you are going to just love her.  She has been busy getting up-to-speed on all things School of Rock and will be reaching out to meet all of you over the next few weeks, but feel free to reach out to her on rbarber@schoolofrock.com or 301-589-7625 with anything you need.

Congrats to our 2021 House Band Members

Auditions were held early in November for this year's House Band.  Congratulations to Beck, Christian, Declan, James, Josey, Lucas, Marie, Milo, Sam, Stella and Von!  We're looking forward to a great year of rock n' roll excellence!

 Show Rehearsals are Leveling Up!

All our Show Directors report this season is hitting new levels of musicianship.  We've been getting the Led out on Mondays with our Zepp show, feeling all the Pop Punk on Tuesdays with our Blink 182 crew and rounding out with a killer set in It's Alt Good on Wednesdays.  It all sounds so gooooooddddd!!!  The energy level and music in the halls has just been, well, a level up!  Check out our instagram and facebook posts (click to like and follow at the bottom of this newsletter) to see some snippets of the rehearsals and shows to come.  Stay tuned for updated rehearsal schedules coming in the new year - we'll be adding some extra in person rehearsals due to the holidays and COVID scheduling changes.

Meet Our New Vocal Instructor Elizabeth Seablom

Our vocal program is expanding and we are so happy to have this talented vocalist join our instructional team here at SOR Silver Spring!  Elizabeth is s a recent graduate from Catholic University's Rome School of Music, Drama and Art with a degree in musical theatre performance.  She has a wide level of vocal experience in not only the rock and pop genres but in more traditional styles as well.  If you are interested in taking vocals, call now before her schedule fills up!

Rock 101 Is In Full Swing

We wish you could watch and hear exactly how good these students are!  They are playing with confidence and really nailing their songs. The progress is pretty amazing.
We will be adding more sessions in January as these ones are currently full, so be sure to reach out for more information if your child is ready to next level their lessons.

Safety Is Our Top Priority

Creating a COVID-19 safe environment has been and remains our #1 priority for students and staff when they are in the building.  We know that many of our students just want to come in person and we are doing all the safety protocols to ensure we are providing a safe environment to rock.
  • We require masks while in the building
  • All persons entering the school are given a symptom and temperature check
  • All persons entering the school immediately wash their hands and hand sanitizer is used frequently
  • We keep the number of people in our building at any given time to levels lower than required
  • We maintain social distancing at all times
  • We have barriers between vocalists and the band in our groups and a barrier is in all lessons
  • We disinfect all high touch surfaces with hospital grade disinfectant using a special misting tool that gets in every crevice, nook and cranny, and disinfect cases that our brought in by students when they arrive.
In other words, we're serious about safety!  If you think your child might do better in person, give us a call and let's give it a try.  You may also schedule a time to come see it all in person to gauge your comfort level.
Student Spotlight of the Month - Meet Brandon
Brandon joined School of Rock in January of this year and quickly made his mark in his first show, Hella Mega, and is now rockin in It's Alt Good on guitar and vocals.
How would you say your playing has changed over the last year?
Since I joined SoR my playing has definitely become more sophisticated in terms of my ability to play songs that require quick transitions or quick solos.

What are your musical influences?

I have so many but if I were to break it down into 3 artists/bands it would be Billie Eilish, Tame Impala, and Childish Gambino.

What is your favorite SoR show and why?
The Jimi Hendrix show because I had a lot more room to experiment and play the songs in a way I preferred to play them.

What do you like about School of Rock?

What I like most is the ability to interact with people who love music the way you do. You talk and interact with people who love the same music and bands and it helps create new friendships that are just harder to find outside this environment.
What advice do you have for new students?
Patience.  It can be frustrating at first to learn a new song(s), but with time and effort, you can play anything you want.

Give the Gift of Music!

Looking for a gift that rocks?  A gift certificate for lessson or programs at School of Rock will last far past the holiday season.  When the grandparents ask what to get this year, send them to our handy online gift  certificates where they can choose an amount, a program or a summer camp!   It's super easy!
