Welcome to the September edition of the Warrior Family Association e-newsletter. My name is Maria Einolf, and my husband, President Karl Einolf, and I are so excited that the academic year has begun. Our students like to refer to me as “First Mom,” and I enjoy my role bringing the Indiana Tech community together as a family.
I am so delighted to share news and information about everything that is happening on our campus. If you are new to our family, welcome and congratulations! Your student made an excellent decision and will receive a fantastic education with small class sizes, exceptional faculty and personal attention.
Each month, I will send this newsletter to let you know what events and activities are happening on campus, what resources are available for your student, and to let you know how you can get involved with your student here at Indiana Tech.

Busy beginnings
After a quiet summer, we were thrilled to welcome students back to campus starting with our new incoming students who arrived on Friday, Aug. 16. The Warrior Welcome Crew, made up of faculty, staff, students and administration, worked together to welcome our new Warriors and help them get settled into their new homes. Between move-in, orientation, eating and attending class, Indiana Tech Student Life hosted 17 different events throughout Welcome Week to help students foster relationships and connections with their peers, as well as learn more about our institution, our campus and Fort Wayne. In addition to these events, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Office of Student Success and several other on-campus departments and student organizations also hosted events throughout the week. One of the highlights of the week was Tech @ Night—a conglomeration of some of the most popular things that happen throughout the year all packed into one night. The evening kicked off with Magician Kid Ace, followed by craziness in Andorfer Commons with games, giveaways and other activities. Students were also given the opportunity to learn more about the community outside of Tech with our Explore the Fort event. Explore the Fort took students to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Ultrazone laser tag and the new nationally recognized Promenade Park on Fort Wayne’s St. Marys River. Students kayaked, fed giraffes, ate lots of pizza, played laser tag and had a great time around Fort Wayne. Check out the Indiana Tech Student Life Facebook page for more pictures from Welcome Week and other events throughout the year.

New Look for Indiana Tech Athletics
The Indiana Tech Department of Athletics launched a new system of logos for its athletic brand this semester. The system features an updated Warrior logo, which has been the official mascot of the university since 1954, and a robust logo set that features the addition of a full-body Warrior, an updated I-Tech logo, a stand-alone shield option, new word marks, fonts for print and web and other options to fit the news of Tech's 27 varsity sports. The change will be rolled out over the next year, as numerous teams will use the new marks on competition gear while all teams will have practice and team gear with the updated logos.

Gary Messick - Associate Dean; Associate Professor, Chemistry
Gary has been with Indiana Tech for well over 30 years and has worn a number of different hats, but teaching chemistry remains his favorite activity. Outside of Tech, he and his wife have enjoyed traveling with their six grandkids. There are three pairs of cousins and they take each pair on a domestic or international trip each year. They have been doing this for about 10 years. This current year, they have been to New Zealand, England and several Cubs baseball games. Next year they are planning trips with them to Paris, Yellowstone and Maui. Of course, these trips are fun, but they believe that, in a small way, they are investing in their education outside of school.
Dr. Josh Long - Associate Professor, College of Business Graduate Studies, Chair
In addition to teaching economics, Josh enjoys at least three different hobbies: aviation, painting and amateur radio. As a pilot, Josh has logged about 400 hours and has flown to Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois and Maryland. In terms of painting, Josh focuses on landscapes, cityscapes and animals—"humans are simply too hard to paint”! Amateur radio—or ham radio—is his favorite hobby. It involves making radio contact with other operators around the world—or maybe just across town. It is a fantastic way to learn about different parts of the world, gain technical expertise and to make new friends!
Dr. Susan E. McGrade - Professor of English
While Susan is a teacher of literature, she also considers herself a student of literature, which means that she is almost always reading. She is attracted to books that offer her new experiences, new ways of thinking about the world and new insights about people's thoughts and behaviors. Susan also enjoys traveling and going to the theatre—something she has done professionally, as she takes students annually to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and has traveled with several student groups in the past, co-leading eight or nine different trips to various part of Europe. As an undergraduate student, she studied abroad in London and Greece. Much of Susan’s time at Tech is spent with NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) students as she is the faculty advisor for Indiana Tech’s student chapter. She spends a fair amount of time with them away from Tech as well, as she hosts bonfires and fishing at her house, and travels with them twice a year to their regional and national conventions. Finally, Susan has been an avid long-distance runner for over 30 years

Final thoughts from a fellow mom I absolutely love living in Fort Wayne and spending a lot of time on the Indiana Tech campus. It was an honor to meet many of our new families at the WFA reception that took place on our freshmen move-in day. I look forward to seeing more of you at events throughout the year. Please know that we will do our very best to make sure your student feels welcome, safe and part of our family. Thank you so much for entrusting your student's future with Indiana Tech. I look forward to communicating with you in upcoming newsletters!
For the parents reading my e-newsletter for the first time, Karl and I have two sons who currently attend colleges in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Being a parent of two boys who rarely inform me of what is happening on their campuses, I know how important it is to connect you to what is happening in your student’s life. I hope that you learn more about Indiana Tech and feel part of our family!
