Dear newest Notre Dame students,
Congratulations again on joining the Notre Dame Class of 2028! This email summarizes the requirement to take Notre Dame’s "Calculus Readiness Test."
All students considering a major or minor that requires a semester of calculus must take the online Calculus Readiness Test by 11:59 PM EDT on May 28, 2024. This requirement includes students with previous AP/IB calculus course work or other advanced calculus experience as well as students intending to pursue a major in the School of Architecture.
This is to ensure that the math course you take in the fall semester is the most appropriate one for you based on your experience and preparation. Please visit the Calculus Requirements by Major for more details.
The Calculus Readiness Test is divided into eight 10-minute sections or quizzes, and each may be done separately.
Your average score on the eight quizzes will help to determine whether you should register for MATH 10150 “Principles for Calculus,” which is an introduction to the concepts essential for subsequent success in one of the calculus sequences. Note: the course MATH 10150 does not fulfill the University’s Core Curriculum Quantitative Reasoning requirement.
The Calculus Readiness Test is used solely to determine the advisability of registering for MATH 10150 “Principles for Calculus.” Students may take a second or third semester calculus course in their first semester only if they earn the necessary prerequisite mathematics course credit by exam (via AP, IB, or Notre Dame exam). Information about earning this course credit via examination can be found here.
The Calculus Readiness Test is your first academic assignment at the University, and it should reflect only your own effort. Complete the assessment without the assistance of anyone or anything else, i.e. no calculators, phones, or other websites. Please approach this test with the seriousness that you would any other standardized test. The test outcome will potentially change the number of semesters of math courses needed to satisfy your college or major requirements.

Again, all eight of the quizzes in the Calculus Readiness Test must be completed by 11:59 PM EDT on May 28, 2024. If you have any questions, please email Chris Temple at ctemple@nd.edu
We are looking forward to seeing you in August!
