Services Increase Over Past 6 Months

Although COVID-19 infections are still occurring in the U.S., and may for the foreseeable future, BEGINNINGS is continuing to see a return to pre-COVID family services. In Fiscal Year 2020 (pre-COVID), we had completed 405 home visits by December 2020; this year, we completed 440 by December 2022. School meetings managed by our Parent Educators numbered 178 in Fiscal Year 2020; as of Dec. 31, 2022, we had already completed 198.
In county services recorded between July 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2022, we continued to see our largest family outreach in Mecklenburg and Wake, followed by Durham, Guilford, Forsyth, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Union and Onslow counties.
Thank you to our staff for their hard work, and to those who ensure that families in the state are connected to us for vitally important services!

YOU Can Host a Birthday Fundraiser!

We periodically learn from META (parent of Facebook) that some of our supporters are asking for gifts to BEGINNINGS as part of their birthday celebrations. We appreciate this appeal to your friends and family on our behalf! Some of those celebrating this way recently were Minda J. Murray-Baez, Shanna Elmore, Jenna Brianne, Nikerra Hill and Lynnette Pierce-Crow. Thank you!
For info on how your next birthday celebration can help BEGINNINGS, check Facebook for instructions.

BEGINNINGS Collaborates with Mental-Health Nonprofit

BEGINNINGS is now collaborating with New Leaf Behavioral Health, based in Raleigh, to address the longstanding impacts of COVID-19 upon the families we serve in North Carolina. A recent staff training conducted by New Leaf helped us identify strategies for coping with stress ourselves as educators, as well as helping us model those strategies for our families. New Leaf seminars will be included in future family workshops organized by BEGINNINGS around the state and funded by a federal grant. Watch our website for more details about these workshops.

Q&A with Staff Member Mary Beth Sholar

Q: Tell us a little about your background.

The majority of my professional career has been spent in an office setting. I have managed multiple storage facilities, had the opportunity to assist individuals with a fresh start in life through the North Carolina Expungement process, and performed basic clerical duties within the Clerk of Courts office and then a private law firm.

I have had the opportunity to live by the beach in Florida, the mountains of Western Massachusetts, and the suburbs of Atlanta, Ga. and Boston, Ma. In 2013, I moved to North Carolina with my two oldest children for a fresh start. Since then, I have remarried, had two more children, and relocated to our family’s farm near the coast.
