Global Collaboration on Aging

Last month, AGE+ welcomed the Korea Education Broadcasting System (EBS) to Oregon. EBS, which serves the function in South Korea that PBS does in the U.S., is working on a 3-part docuseries focusing on how communities can better prioritize older adults' quality of life. Much like Japan and, soon, the U.S., South Korea is experiencing shifting demographics and has more older adults than children. We were flattered that EBS came to AGE+ to see how we develop innovative solutions for an age-inclusive Oregon.
EBS spent five days with us, learning about and filming our important work. We took them to see our Circles of Care reciprocal volunteer program in action, to Madras to see our affordable, modular housing model, and to sit in on policy discussions with sector leaders about the implications of our changing demographics. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to demonstrate the success of our asset-based community development model that we employ around the state. Learning from each other is a wonderful way to broaden horizons and strategize a shared future where all people have options and opportunities to live their best lives.
Thank you to everyone who supported AGE+ in this endeavor! The docuseries will air nationwide in South Korea in the spring, and we hope to share footage with you shortly thereafter.

Over 80% of adults 50-80 experience ageism in their daily lives. Despite living longer and healthier, attitudes and assumptions about older people have yet to evolve. AGE+ aims to create an age-positive culture across Oregon in workplaces, healthcare settings, communities, and more.
We are launching a Leadership Exchange on Ageism in Oregon, designed for decision-makers, executives, policy experts, and funders. Sessions will challenge participants to examine internal and external bias, see their role in interrupting ageism, and connect them to tools for success. We also offer anti-ageism educational opportunities for community organizations. Please reach out to Lori Silverman at LSilverman@ageplus.org to inquire.

Milestone Moment for AGE+
|
|
|
In 2023, we successfully transitioned our staff leadership when our founder, Keren Brown Wilson, and AGE+'s board of directors unanimously and enthusiastically made Stephanie Hooper our CEO. Previously serving as deputy director and then president of AGE+, Stephanie has been instrumental in growing our reach, building our community capacity, and strengthening our ability to respond with innovative approaches as we navigate unprecedented changes to our population.

"Stephanie is a guiding voice on aging. She's spent her career as a champion for nonprofits, and AGE+ and Oregon are fortunate to have her leadership. As we both enter our next chapters, I know AGE+ will thrive and continue to make big impacts for older adults with her direction," Keren said. As our founder and board chair, Keren's primary focus will be to generate resources and awareness, and deepen our relationships across sectors as AGE+ pursues Shared Future Oregon. Together, Stephanie, Keren, and their team are forging a new vision for aging in Oregon.

Small communities rarely have workplace offices where older adults can find jobs that fit their expertise and are age-friendly environments. Many left the workforce during the pandemic and, without options to reenter, have remained home with meager income. Some older adults want to return to work, and workforce shortages prove that Oregon needs them. Shared Future Oregon, our Multi-Sector Plan for an Age-Friendly Oregon, focuses on economic vitality, where older adults are an asset and are offered pathways to contribute, earn a living, and access the services they seek.

| Digital Equity for Oregon
|
We have had numerous conversations with partners and older adults around Oregon who are interested in AGE+ exploring opportunities to deliver digital literacy programming. Like most people, older adults increasingly rely on technology for reasons like social connection and healthcare. However, broadband access and cost remain out of reach to many older adults, especially those in rural areas and other small communities.
AGE+ is proud to be a member of the Oregon Broadband Equity Coalition. Our participation will focus on supporting digital literacy for older adults. We look forward to sharing our progress!
