Is Hookah Safer? Or Is That Belief Just Blowing Smoke?
|
Hookah is often seen as a cleaner alternative to smoking cigarettes, but researchers at The University of Texas at Arlington are launching a new study to put that assumption to the test.
Ziyad Ben Taleb, professor of Kinesiology and director of the Nicotine and Tobacco Research Laboratory, has received a two-year, $442,763 grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse to investigate how waterpipe size and heating resources affect hookah smoking.
"There is a new trend of electronic heating elements that heat the tobacco without combustion," Dr. Ben Taleb said. "There are marketing claims that these are safer, but we don't know. That's why this study is needed."

CONHI Kinesiology Motor Development and Cognitive Motor Neuroscience Labs Attend NASPSPA Annual Conference
|
Faculty and students from the Department of Kinesiology attended the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) Annual Conference in June 2026. Attendees included Dr. Priscila Tamplain, Director of the Motor Development Lab; Crystal Alvarez, PhD student and Motor Development Lab Manager; Dr. Shikha Prashad, Director of the Cognitive Motor Neuroscience Lab; and Victoria Rednoske, PhD student and Cognitive Motor Neuroscience Lab member.
The North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing research and scholarship in motor behavior, sport and exercise psychology, and physical activity.
Both students showcased their research through multiple presentations at the conference. Victoria delivered a verbal presentation titled "Cognitively Demanding Breaks Hinder Micro-Offline Gains During Motor Sequence Learning," which examined how cognitive demands during breaks influence motor learning and performance.
Crystal, who recently successfully defended her PhD dissertation in Kinesiology, presented two verbal presentations: "Implications of Motor Assessment Choice: Comparing MABC-3 and BOT-3 Outcomes Across Neurodevelopmental Groups" and "Parent-Reported Motor Challenges and Objective Performance: Agreement and Discrepancies Across Developmental Groups." Her research focuses on understanding motor skill development and assessment in children with neurodevelopmental conditions to improve identification and support strategies.
Congratulations to Crystal and Victoria for their outstanding presentations and scholarly achievements!
