Message from the President

Dear Parent,
Can you believe it has already been a month since you brought your student to NAU, and we started our fall semester together? Time is flying by so quickly! I hope you are hearing all about it during regular calls and emails home.
As a parent myself, I understand the mixed feelings of having your child starting a new life at a university. As a new president, the feelings are similar—excitement mixed in with a little bit of anxiety. To all of you parents who are new to this, I have good news—Family Weekend is almost here. We are all excited to have our students’ families join us for fun, football, and festivities on October 1-3.
It will look a bit different since you dropped your child off in warm and sunny August; with the advent of fall, the leaves on the trees are starting to change color, mellowing into the deep orange, red, and yellow that make Flagstaff extra beautiful this time of year, and the temperatures are getting cooler—especially in the mornings. On my daily trek to the office, I see students walking to class, pulling food out of our Starship robots, and engaging with each other and in activities throughout the campus. I have seen those first-week jitters transform into a sense of connectedness and a community of care that bring us all together.
In the few short weeks since the beginning of the semester, I have watched your students grow in confidence, tackle difficult challenges, build relationships that will last long past their time at NAU, and dive into their education—studying, collaborating, creating art, doing research, and so much more. I’m sure there have been more than a few all-nighters as students hit the books.
And I got to join the freshman and sophomore classes as they stormed the field at our first football game, all decked in blue and gold to cheer on our team. We are Lumberjacks!
I hope you are able to make plans to come visit as we have been planning for your arrival and have so much fun in store. Check out the schedule and see how you can get involved. The Lumberjack community is excited to welcome your family to NAU this weekend!

NAU Fall 2021 Virtual Recruiting Experience WEEK (VRX)

The NAU Fall Virtual Recruiting Experience (VRX) week is October 4 – 8, 2021. It is open to students of ALL majors. It provides an opportunity for students to connect with employers and graduate schools as they pursue internships, full-time employment, and further education. This event will be hosted virtually on Handshake. Below are the links to the five industry days that students will be able to choose from:
  1. Health and Helping Professions
  2. Non-Profit/K-12 Education (Non-AZ)/Recreation
  3. All Industries (Insurance/E-Commerce/Virtual Opportunities)
  4. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  5. Government/Public Service/Law Enforcement
Career fairs are a great way for students to get a leg up with companies and graduate colleges that they are interested in. A virtual format will enhance the experience, allowing your student to:
  • Meet with employers. Interact with recruiters through video, audio, or chat.
  • Discover new career opportunities. Students will get recommendations on which employers they should connect with based on their Handshake profile.
  • Never wait in line, ever. Pre-schedule 1:1 or group sessions with employers ahead of the fair or on the day of.
  • Make an impression. Students are able to bring their unique perspectives to the table, ask great questions, and follow up with recruiters after the fair.
If students are looking for more guidance on navigating a virtual career search, NAU Career Development is here for them! The NAU CD team is hosting FIVE student prep sessions. The prep sessions, helpful tips, information, and all FIVE VRX week recruiting days can be found online.
NAU is committed to the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff and follows CDC’s recommended guidelines on COVID-19.
