Call for Nominations - Clara Bliss Hinds Society Annual Mentorship Awards

The Clara Bliss Hinds Society at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the third annual Dr. Clara Bliss Hinds Mentorship Awards. Completed nomination packages are due Monday, May 13, 2024 at 5 pm EST and should be submitted as a single pdf via email attachment to clarabliss@gwu.edu. Winners will be recognized at the 3rd Annual Clara Bliss Hinds Society Leadership Event on June 26, 2024 at 5:30 EST. 

We welcome nominations of any GW SMHS (GW, Children's National, VA) full- or part-time faculty member of any gender who has demonstrated exceptional mentorship of female students, residents, fellows, and/or faculty. Faculty may self-nominate. Nominees and nominators do not need to be current members of the Clara Bliss Hinds Society but are welcome to join.

Nominees fall into the following categories based on length of career (not service to GW):
  • Rising Star – 2 to 10 years after completion of post-graduate education (e.g., residency/fellowship, post-doc)
  • Shining Brightly – 11-20 years after completion of post-graduate education
  • Luminary - 21+ years after completion of post-graduate education
Please visit the CBH Society webpage for more information, instructions, and the contents of a nomination package. In order to provide greater transparency in the scoring process, the Executive Committee is sharing its Scoring Rubric and Tips & Tricks for preparing an effective application. New this year, nominees may include a short (300 word max) statement detailing their perceived impact of mentoring. For any questions, please contact clarabliss@gwu.edu.
 The Clara Bliss Hinds Society is the group for women in medicine and health science at GW SMHS, and membership is open to full and part-time faculty of SMHS of any gender.

Theme: The Impact of Change in the Health Education Learning Environment

The impact of change in the health education learning environment is profound, affecting both students and educators alike. Shifts in curriculum, teaching methodologies, technological integration, and societal demands all contribute to the evolving landscape of health education. What changes can enhance students' understanding and application of health concepts? How are we currently promoting critical thinking skills and preparing learners for real-world challenges? In what ways does the adaptable learning environment foster educators' creativity and efficacy in delivering relevant and engaging content? How can health education institutions embrace change and innovation to better equip learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare systems and promote individual and community well-being?

The Generalists in Medical Education conference is where health professions educators and students from across the United States gather to make connections, share ideas, grow professionally, and discover solutions to challenges in teaching and learning.

You are invited to submit a proposal for this year’s conference. The conference will provide a forum to share your educational research and innovations.

The Generalists in Medical Education offer a variety of proposal and presentation formats: 
  • Round Table Discussions
  • Descriptive Sessions
  • Ignite Presentations
  • Panel Discussions
  • Problem-Solving Sessions
  • Skill Acquisition Sessions

To ensure a diverse program and participation, an individual can only be the lead author/presenter on one accepted proposal. However, individuals can be supporting authors on up to three accepted proposals. More information, including a Submission Tip sheet, is available on the TGME website. Proposals must be submitted electronically no later than 11:59 pm EST on May 13, 2024.

CFE Faculty Education Technology Support Office Hours

Wednesdays from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. 

Do you need help designing an educational session or using a new teaching technology? Teddy Hristov, the CFE Senior Instructional Designer, holds weekly office hours to support faculty. 
These office hours are designated for discussing and practicing the best use of educational technology and pedagogical teaching/learning methods. If you have questions about completing a session design worksheet, do not hesitate to contact her.

VoiceThread Update

VoiceThread is a platform for creating multimedia asynchronous conversations around resources like images, documents, presentations, and videos. Students and instructors can comment on the posted content using text, audio, or video. To learn more about this tool, you can watch a CFE webinar from 2020 on Interactive Multimedia Discussions and Presentations using VoiceThread. (GW login is required to access the recording). 

There is an update coming up this summer that will allow individuals to use a VoiceThread in one-conversation mode, to zoom in on comments, and to move around slides while writing comments to other participants’ contributions.

A New CFE Faculty One-Page Resource on Study Habits
The CFE has put together a tipsheet on “Tips for Sustaining Study Habits, based on the information on The Office of Student Support website. The resources for the tips are listed for students in the Study Skills section on the Learning Support page of the OSS site. This compilation of tips is being prepared for faculty and what faculty can advise on sustaining study habits. Feel free to print and distribute to your students!
Book Synopsis, Part 2: Pedagogical Tips from the book “Small Teaching Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning” - 2nd Edition by James M. Lang

The idea of small teaching is to implement incremental techniques persistently in every session. For example, brief 5- to 10-minute practice questions in a session can have a long-lasting educational effect. Classroom communication and instructional tweaks are opportunities for small teaching and they can make big changes in the course learning outcomes. The author partitioned the book into three sections: Knowledge, Understanding, and Inspiration

Part 1, the Knowledge part describes three techniques: retrieving, predicting, and interleaving. These small teaching techniques were listed in the CFE Newsletter from March 2024.

The Understanding part describes these three techniques: connecting, practicing, and self-explaining. They are listed below.

Connecting - The idea is to connect the main points in the big context of the knowledge body from previous and current sessions. 
Faculty can use the Connecting teaching approach by having students complete:
  1. A pre-quiz with questions about specific subject matter can be distributed and the questions can be answered at the beginning of a session.
  2. To connect to new material, learners can be asked to refer to it in association with other sessions and identify the most unclear aspects in these cross-references. 
  3. Faculty should provide a conceptual framework before class, or an outline of the session at the beginning, to help connect the main points in the big context of the knowledge body. 
  4. Ask students to create a concept or mind map of either or both prior or current knowledge to establish a framework for the subject matter by providing students with focused questions.
Practicing - Students practice in class what they have immediately learned in the same session.
Faculty can use the Practicing teaching approach by having students:
  1. Practice in class for 10 to 15 minutes what they have been taught at the end of each session.
  2. Group work with immediate feedback and peer or faculty mentoring is important to improve collaboration and help creativity and focus. 
  3. To better plan these practices, faculty and students can brainstorm a list of cognitive skills connected to learning outcomes.
Self-explaining - Self-explaining a task while performing it successfully improves the connection between knowledge and practice or skill. 
Self-explanation is done out loud to oneself or others, because:
Explanations help concepts be connected to specific examples and that helps with overall big-picture learning and connecting the dots.  
The technique is good for improving study habits because it helps students modify their mental models when encountering material that prompts them to revise their knowledge. 
Peer teaching or having students explain new material to each other can help faculty determine how fast to move on to a new concept or piece of knowledge.
Students who learn from worked examples have trouble transferring their knowledge from examples to new contexts. This can be alleviated when learners practice new procedures and explain their work to others
National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity

Prof. Dr. Mairead Pratschke hosted by AI-ALOE (The National AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education), in April 2024 presented on AI implementation in higher education and introduced the concept of Generativism as an approach to creating human-centred AI-enabled education. In this less-than-an-hour video, she addressed past, current, and future contexts and avenues for developing AI learning experiences, e.g. the use of AI learners to provide feedback on the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the classroom.

The AAMC IDEAS Learning Webinars are free resources for registered members. AAMC membership is also free.  The IDEAS Learning Webinars are led by experts to provide "comprehensive, reliable information." These educational series are helpful to health and medical faculty, staff, and students who want to be proactive in their efforts to foster inclusive environments and promote equity in medical schools. The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-racism Series page outlines all recorded webinars, upcoming sessions, and additional resources.
