A Fresh Start to the New Season
|
We're thrilled to finally share The Table Read with you, a monthly newsletter from the New Works Department at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre.
Who is our New Works Department? Well, it begins with 538 Alumni Writers from our annual Festival of New Musicals and extends to a community of 209 Grantee projects produced and developed all across the country by a network of over 200 member theatres and individuals, including 305 Artistic, Producing and New Works Staff and commercial and creative producers, all working together to push the art forward. And then there are those of you we haven't met yet or are just learning about this community. Hopefully this newsletter becomes a crossroads for all of us and centers not only what we do, but how, why and what else we're working toward.
This month, we had a wonderful time joining Melis Aker, Jacinta Clusellas and Tatiana Pandiani of Azul at the General Consulate of Argentina as they prepared for their EP Release Concert. Also, go behind the scenes with our Festival Alumni Justin Huertas' Lizard Boy as he joins forces with NAMT Member/Alumni Cara Reichel of Prospect Theater Company. Each month, you'll get new-works-in-action pieces like this, plus a selection of upcoming submission deadlines, jobs, and the new musicals map. Keep an eye out for stories like these and other exciting professional development resources.
Thank you for being a part of our New Works Department.

On the afternoon of their EP release and just hours before their celebratory concert at Feinstein’s/54 Below, we sat down with Melis Aker (Book/Lyrics), Jacinta Clusellas (Music/Lyrics) and Tatiana Pandiani (Book/Lyrics/Director), the creators of the new musical Azul (Fest ’21) at the Consulate General of Argentina in New York City.
NAMT: Thank you so much for having us today. We’ll start right off with: what’s the flight path for this musical? What brings us into tonight? Tell us the journey of the show.
Tatiana Pandiani: So, Jacinta is a composer and had an album come out in 2015 called El Pájaro Azul. There was a release party here in the same building where we are right now.
I loved the music and I thought, “Oh, this could be a musical.” Read more.

As they prepare to begin rehearsals for their Off-Broadway premiere, Lizard Boy’s (Fest '20) creator Justin Huertas and Prospect Theater Company’s Producing Artistic Director Cara Reichel join forces to discuss having secret powers and roll out the green carpet to assemble their team of real-world superheroes.
Cara Reichel: Justin! I’m so excited for this chance to talk about your marvelous show’s journey. Let's start by sharing our origin stories and how we had the opportunity to come together around this musical.
Justin Huertas:
So, I started writing Lizard Boy over 10 years ago. I had come out of college as an actor. The then Artistic Director of Seattle Rep, Jerry Manning—
CR: Legendary.
JH:
Legendary Jerry Manning. He knew me as an actor because my first show out of college was Speech and Debate at Seattle Rep. And then he happened to come to a musical theatre concert, and he saw me play cello in the band. He said, “You're an actor who plays cello. You should have a show where you play cello in it.” And I'm like, “Yeah, whatever that means. I agree with you.” So, he says, “I'm going to commission you to write yourself a show.” Knowing nothing about my ability to write. I didn't know if I was, you know… I took a playwriting class in college, but— Read more.
