SGA Celebrates in the great state of Pennsylvania
The Senior Golfers returned to the delightful Bedford Springs Resort for a wonderful time in the mountains of the Keystone State. The event began with an elegant dinner in the resort's beautiful Crystal Dining Room, where members enjoyed delicious fare and also desserts that were also works of art by the resort's talented staff.  SGA newcomers Sharon Green and Judy and Mike Sullivan were introduced, and details were given out for the week's events.
After the three days of golf, Allison Park's Gary & JoAnn Claus were winners in their individual categories at Low Gross. Gary and his good Pittsburgh friend Jay Thier were tied after two days, but Gary had a good round on the final day to win by four strokes. Jay ended up with Low Net honors. Winner for the ladies at net was Fox Chapel newcomer Sharon Green.
Winning Best Ball team was Judy & Mike Sullivan, Bill Ries, and blind draw Jeff Leech. Close to pin winners were Sue Arnold, Jeff Leech, and Mike Sullivan. Best-dressed Golfers prize went to Judy & Mike Sullivan for their stunning outfits of blue shirts and pink knickers.

The Bedford Springs Resort - A New Life

The SGA trip marked the 15th anniversary of visitors once again making their way around a small bend in the Alleghenies and seeing the architecture, the history, the grandeur of the Bedford Springs Hotel. Although originally built in 1806, the hotel was out of operation and close to ruins for around twenty years. It took seven years to bring her back from the dead, with a cost of about $120 million.
SGA members were very appreciative of the excellence of the restoration. The hotel is grand and elegant — yet nothing about it is over the top. Walking through the lobby, the hallways of every floor, in the library or along the long porches, and there is a calm sense that the building itself is thankful to welcome visitors once again.
Part of the restoration was installation of a striking 39-star United States flag from 1865 behind the front desk in the lobby. Although at the time there were only 36 official states, talk of three new states inspired the creator to add three additional stars. The flag is the only known 39-star flag in existence, and its preservation behind glass and suitable lighting show that mindful care is being taken of it.
