Congratulations to JMC student Emma Saville on receiving the Konica Minolta Excellence in Community, Education & Leadership (ExCEL) Award.
Emma, a senior in multimedia journalism, was selected based on her leadership and communication skills, involvement at KU and in the Lawrence community, and her work with various students and organizations.
The selection committee included representatives from the KU Alumni Association, Kansas Memorial Union, Center for Service Learning and the Homecoming Steering Committee.

Service Learning helps students work towards social change, meet new people and engage in self-reflection through community service and coursework. Undergraduate research opportunities are available in majors across KU and include original research or creative projects under the guidance of a research mentor. Stop by Summerfield Hall, room 203, on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 2-4 p.m. to talk with a staff member about opportunities.

JMC School students traveled to Kansas City for Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball media day last Wednesday. Check out content created by students for the University Daily Kansan and the Playmakers. JMC 430 students got involved as Big 12 staff volunteers while other students traveled to the event as part of their duties as KU Athletics employees.
Students in last spring’s JMC 440 course (Advanced Digital Marketing, Communications, Advertising and Public Relations) created feature videos that will play through the Native Fashion Exhibition in the Spencer Museum of Art. The exhibition will end in December after a fashion show. Students involved in the exhibit include: Graham Barnes, Olivia Boone, Ethan Enderle, Yasmine Ferhat, Winnie Fiss, Elise Heidrick, Keanen Inthavongsa, Janie Mahaffy, Wairimu Mbogori, Quinn Mozena, David Nelson, Anthony Reed, William Wall and Rachel Yates.
NCAA employee visits JMC 430: Mary Eiland is the associate director of championships marketing and ticketing at the NCAA. She spoke to JMC 430 (Communicating Sports Information) about strategy and communications planning involved with promoting ticket sales for March Madness – all rounds of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Her presentation included insight on timing, messaging, audience segmentation and fan analytics. She also shared her career path and talked about the importance of relationships to advancing in college sports jobs.

The Eudora Times has launched a $25,000 pledge drive to support its continued operations. Since 2019, the start-up online newspaper has provided JMC students with real-world experience in community journalism. All funding supports these young journalists in their work. Donate here.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas was interviewed by KCTV 5 in an article discussing why TV stations run political ads, and whether or not they have to be factual. Belmas said that political ads are considered “public interest” and a TV station can lose its license for refusing to run them.
Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon will give the 2024 Budig Lecture at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Clarkson Gallery. McLendon's lecture, "Soul of the Story: Writing in the Age of AI," will cover why we write, how we write and why humans are still integral to the writing process.

Associate Professor Teri Finneman is a guest on the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery podcast called Portraits. The show will release on Election Day and discuss women's presidential history. Finneman is also an upcoming guest on the Local News Matters podcast and appeared on the Unsung History podcast. She also was featured in the Wall Street Journal's feature obituary about AP reporter Linda Deutsch.

Join the Dole Institute of Politics for the third Pizza & Politics event of the semester on Friday, Nov. 1 at 12 p.m. in the Alderson Auditorium at the KU Memorial Union. Pizza and Politics is an informal forum during the lunch hour where students can gain insight from notable professionals on aspects of politics or public service in an interview-style program. JMC School Lecturer Mark Johnson and Kirk Sampson will host a discussion on the TikTok divest-or-ban bill and the court cases surrounding it.
Mocktails and Mingle: Students interested in arts and design are welcome to attend Mocktails and Mingle from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Jayhawk Welcome Center. This informal networking event allows students to connect with working professionals and KU alumni in the creative arts industry, including visual art, design, photography and more. It’s a great opportunity to develop your network in career pathways interesting to you; talk to professionals about their career journey; learn and practice important networking skills; and connect with on-campus resources.
Mocktails and Mingle: First-Gen is happening on Monday, Nov. 4 from 4:45-6:45 p.m. in the Jayhawk Welcome Center. This informal networking event helps students connect with working professionals and KU alumni from across industry. It is open to all majors and class levels who self-identify as First-Generation college students. Check out all the Mocktails and Mingle events.

Amie Just, j’17, is a co-author of the new book, “Sports Journalism: An Introduction to Reporting and Writing.” The book combines decades of on-the-field reporting and in-the-classroom teaching to present the most comprehensive and contemporary playbook for student journalists. It features expanded coverage of social media, writing and interviewing skills, as well as discussions on race and gender in the world of sports.
The authors have filled the book with the technologies and techniques they use across their many roles as bloggers, videographers, commentators, talk show anchors and more. Chapters provide exercises for practicing concepts and skills as well as discussion prompts about contemporary issues in sports. You can request an exam copy here.

Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara Bichelmeyer has been named to the “I am First Too” poster, which will be unveiled Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Kansas Union. Bichelmeyer, a JMC alumna, headlines a group of four first-generation advocates at the 6th annual poster unveiling. More information is available in the KU Today release.
