Note from the Dean
Owen students benefit from the steady presence of business and government leaders flowing through our building. Hosting speakers is a long-standing tradition that started back when Dewey Dane (right) began bringing business leaders to campus. In fact, the seminar he started continues today under the watchful eye of Professor David Parsley; just last week, six Owen students discussed inflation at a lunch with Citibank Global Chief Economist Catherine Mann.

Of course, Owen’s many speaking engagements have grown far beyond a single seminar series. At Owen, students get 1:1 access to the best leaders through many different opportunities, including Fireside Chats, small lunches and seminars. In the past month alone, students rubbed shoulders with leaders in our unique personal-scale environment, from U.S. Representative French Hill to AT&T Communications CFO Dan Fete to RetailMeNot CEO Cotter Cunningham to Battery Ventures Partner Russ Fleischer.

While Dewey is no longer with us today — he would have been 100 this spring — I know he would be proud of the unique access to fantastic speakers that Owen provides for the community.

Best,
Eric

Recruiting Numbers Strong for Current Classes
While we don’t officially benchmark recruiting numbers until graduation and beyond, the outcomes are tracked monthly — and the MBA employment outcomes for the classes of 2019 and 2020 are at highest levels ever recorded by spring break. Currently 75% of the May graduates have reported an offer and 70% of the first-year students have secured an internship. Our MSF graduates are also receiving and accepting offers at a record pace: 74% of the 2019 graduates have offers so far.

While we are extremely excited about the strong employment for the current classes, there are still upcoming graduates (MBA, MSF and MMark) and first-year MBAs open to employment opportunities. Opportunities in Nashville generally come later in the cycle, as do those in some industries such as real estate and technology. If there are opportunities or leads that you are aware of, please feel free to share them with the Career Management Center so we can make them available to our current students. To share an opportunity or lead, please email Recruiting@owen.vanderbilt.edu.

Ranking Roundup: Spring Edition
Spring break typically marks the end of winter and the annual ranking season. In December, Bloomberg Businessweek released its new global ranking, and Vanderbilt MBA came in at #22, just one spot beyond our US ranking of #21 released in November. Later that same month, the Wall Street Journal released a new ranking in collaboration with Times Higher Education. The Vanderbilt MBA was ranked #3 globally, and our MSF program ranked #1. In January, the Vanderbilt MBA jumped 18 spots in the Financial Times ranking to #52 globally and #26 in the US, tied with UNC. A few weeks ago, US News & World Report ranked the Vanderbilt MBA #29, a drop from last year’s #26.
Each ranking provides us with some information that we will study with the goal of improvement, though many rankings like US News do not reflect Owen’s unique personal-scale experience. In the end, I am most excited about fundamental improvements and I’m proud of what we are accomplishing as we hone our strategy to deliver world-class business education on a personal-scale. —Dean Johnson
