Everybody, Partner Up!

I got to visit the new DLSNC building at the groundbreaking ceremony in July. The event was small and cute. I think we all had a pretty enjoyable adventure. Taking pictures in masks was definitely very interesting. I never would’ve thought I’d get the chance to do that! Our posing instructions were simple, “Smile with your eyes!” If you’re wondering how that’s even possible, I don’t know. But we also got to tour the inside of the school, and that was definitely worth it! Although it currently needs a little work, I’m excited to see the “After.” This building is going to have the best makeover ever! The sanctuary was brilliantly magnificent, and the bathrooms were eerily frightening (still fun to explore, though). There was also a huge pipe organ (in the sanctuary, not the bathroom). Hands down, best field trip ever.

“I am a senior.” Aaaah. It’s not real. I’m going to spend the last year of my entire high school life and career (to make it sound extra fancy), quite possibly, at home! It cannot be real. I have barely even processed that I am now a senior! I was just a junior! What in the world? I was just a sophomore even, like last week! Don’t even get me started on freshman year. Where did it all go? I have to find a new place to call home now (college. Yes, I’m dramatic). I have to grow up. Noo! I can’t believe it’s real.

I have full belief that we can do this. I can do this. You can do this. We are going to keep walking until we get to the end of that tunnel. It’s pretty dark right now. If you’re scared (and it’s okay if you are), feel free to ask for a hand to hold. Leave nobody behind! We will get through this together! Does this sound like cheesy, false hope? Maybe. But perspective! They are just a few words on paper. They can’t hurt you either way. So, keep going! Run and scream if you want! But everybody, partner up!

Nik Tucker '14, designer at Bora Architecture, and our Corporate Work Study Program were the highlight of PBJ's most recent edition.

"As a child, the 23-year-old was interested in engineering and architecture, but he wasn’t sure what a career in those fields would look like. Four years at De La Salle North Catholic High School changed that.

'Not many cities across the country have this kind of powerful program,' Leong said. 'I am hopeful that Portland at this time, in this crisis will reach out and partner with us.'"

CWSP Partner Orientation

Last week, the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) Department held its first Virtual Partner Orientation. We were really excited to have 46 supervisors from multiple companies on the call who were eager to learn how they could make the CWSP successful during this challenging year. Virtual Meet & Greets, Student Engagement, Goal Setting, and Wellness were some of the topics covered. We also had a supervisor from Survey Monkey present and discuss the changes and engagement ideas that they have put in place to make sure that students adjust to their new work environment. We are really honored to have so many corporate supporters this year.

CWSP will start the year virtually with corporate partners hosting virtual Meet & Greets for students each Wednesday. We hope to move into a hybrid model at the end of the first term with students working remotely from DLSNC and/or in partners' offices. Our end goal is for students to return to traditional CWSP programming, working five days a month in the partner offices.

Class of 2020 Starts their Freshman Year at College

Many members of the Class of 2020 are starting college classes virtually or haven't started yet due to their colleges being on the quarter system, but valedictorian Juan Lazaro '20 is on campus at Notre Dame. He says, "Going to classes on the beautiful Notre Dame campus has been a great experience so far. You can see this is just a big family. Everyone is in community doing their homework, eating a meal, or even just playing spikeball (which is a big deal over here and can get very competitive). And if you aren’t a big people person, there are also plenty of empty places to rest or do your work, including the Grotto. I have definitely been enjoying this experience to the fullest."

After Juan's first few weeks, Notre Dame closed campus for two weeks and moved to remote learning due to a rise in Covid-19 cases. The coronavirus pandemic is providing unique challenges to our newest graduates as they begin their college careers. We know Juan is trying to stay positive, as are his classmates, and we stand together with them as they navigate these difficult times.

Food Pantry

Thank you to our Ambassador Board (AB) members and dedicated staff members for keeping the food pantry going all summer. Ambassador Board member Alexander Spalding connected us to Birch Community Services, which is part of the farm-to-family program that has distributed extra food to families during the pandemic. Each family who requests it ahead of time receives two boxes of food from Birch Community Services. Mr. Tosu connected us to Peace House and at Tuesday's food pantry they provided tortillas, greens, cheese, and oranges. We are so grateful for our supportive volunteers, staff, and community partners!

DLSNC welcomes Americorps/Jesuit Volunteer, Alexis Aviles

DLSNC is excited to partner again with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest during the 2020–21 academic year. This year, we welcome Americorps/Jesuit Volunteer Alexis Aviles, a recent graduate of the University of Richmond, in Virginia. Alexis arrived in Portland from her hometown of New Orleans in early August, and she will be providing academic support in the ARC and assisting with student service opportunities in LYM. We had an opportunity to ask Alexis a few questions as a way of introducing herself.
