Collaboration and Local Capacity Strengthening (LCS) with Universities |
D4I’s objective is to increase the capacity of local actors for rigorous evaluation in countries where the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works. D4I implements activities in partnership with local institutions, including governments and universities, to generate evidence, ensure data quality, integrate gender, and promote data use.
One successful approach D4I has adopted involves strengthening the capacity of universities in Armenia and Moldova, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, and Malawi. In line with USAID’s Local Capacity Strengthening Policy, faculty and students from university partners identified their unique capacity strengthening priorities and worked closely with D4I to develop appropriate tailored interventions. Strengthening Local Capacity of Universities |
D4I works to ensure that its capacity strengthening approach is aligned with the USAID Local Capacity Strengthening Policy. Wherever possible, the project incorporates intentional, demand-driven processes that start with understanding local systems and the roles that local actors play.

| Institutionalization of Social Work M&E Courses in Armenia and Moldova |
Read this new blog to discover how D4I has transformed social work education in Armenia and Moldova. In Armenia, institutions have embraced M&E courses, setting a new standard for data-driven decision making in social services. In Moldova, universities have integrated M&E courses into their programs, with remarkable success in student outcomes and curriculum development. | Developing Curricula with the Department of Population Science at Dhaka University in Bangladesh |
In Bangladesh, D4I and the Department of Population Science at Dhaka University (DPS-DU) engaged in a collaboration aimed at strengthening capacity for M&E and analysis of health, nutrition, and population data among faculty and students at DPS-DU. Through this collaboration, D4I also supported faculty with the design of a monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) workshop for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare program managers.

| Catalyzing Evaluation Capacity at the Kinshasa School of Public Health |
In the DRC, D4I has worked with the Kinshasa School of Public Health (KSPH) to strengthen its capacity for evaluation. Through interviews and surveys with KSPH faculty and students, a core set of evaluation learning modules was selected by KSPH for development and made available online via the school’s learning management platform. | Preparing the Next Generation of Researchers at Jimma University |
In Ethiopia, D4I collaborated with Jimma University to provide MEL support for a Packard Foundation-funded integrated development project called FUTURES—My Forest, My Livelihood, My Family, that serves communities in the Yayu Biosphere region of Ethiopia. D4I and Jimma University implemented the baseline and midline evaluation and coordinated on capacity strengthening efforts. Faculty from Jimma University and D4I staff served as thesis advisors for two female MSc students. Learn more from the recent publications below!

D4I conducted an impact evaluation of the USAID-and PEPFAR-funded Malawi Secondary Education Expansion for Development (SEED) activity in collaboration with the Centre for Social Research (CSR) at the University of Malawi.
