Hey there, Shorthorn Alum — we thought you might like to check out the new office, meet current staffers and your fellow alumni, enjoy some snacks and food — and attend UTA's Homecoming festivities afterward if you'd like.

You've probably heard about it by now — but, over the summer, we moved out of the lower level space we'd called home since 1994 due to the demolition/renovation of most of the University Center. We saved everything important, but did use the move as an opportunity to jettison a significant amount of clutter, inbox/outbox trays, Zip disks, binder clips, FireWire cables and paper records.

Two newsroom staffers and Production Manager Adam Drew took a hardhat tour of the partially demolished University Center in August. The large photo above, facing north, was taken from roughly the location of the Post Office on the ground floor, with The Shorthorn newsroom below (bathrooms on the right, photo and the breakroom in the distance) and the Rio Grande ballroom above. The others show the Plaza food court and looking west up and out of the newsroom from roughly the vantage point of Laurie’s office.

The Shorthorn's new office is in D101 in the Continuing Education and Workforce Development building on the southeast edge of campus south of College Park Center. The main space is a large, open-concept room with modular desks, high ceilings, windows and — to our knowledge — no flooding! All together, it's about the size of the previous newsroom, plus the photo studio and the break room. We've created a number of planning and meeting areas, as well as a small in-office living room/hangout zone with a smart TV, sofa, coffee table and some stools, plus critical items like a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker.
The first fall staff meeting in the new office, with a permanently-mounted 105" screen for trainings (no more rolling markerboard!), Journalism Movie Fridays™ and famous alumni guest speakers who might like to Zoom in for training sessions (wink, wink).
Editors have a meeting at the Bound Volume Bar™ shortly after it was painstakingly taken apart, transported and then reassembled.

Preserving Parts of the Publication’s Past Premises |
We worked with UTA Facilities to save some architectural elements from the old office, including the gold Student Publications logo from the entrance at the top of the stairs as well as the 20-foot-wide silver Shorthorn logo and lettering from the orange wall of the old newsroom.
Facilities cut out the sign in the old entrance at the top of the stairs and finished off the edges with trim salvaged from the office.
Originally we'd planned to cut out the entire wall and mount it in the new space as an objet d'art —but Facilities was concerned the drywall would crack during transport, so they removed the lettering and mounted it to a new orange background.
