Holiday Spirit at WHS!

Winterfest Spirit Week Dress Up Themes! Dec 13-17

Hey Falcon 
We are so excited to announce the themes and details for this year's Holiday Spirit Week!! This will run December 13th-17th (the week before break).

Monday - Sweater Weather Day. Students wear their favorite sweater to school and students can participate in a Woodinville Holiday Kahoot during lunch for a chance to win a prize.

Tuesday - Holiday Hat Day. Students wear their favorite holiday hat such as a beanie, Santa hat, or any other creative option! They can come to the cafeteria during lunch for free hot chocolate!

Wednesday - Anything But a Backpack Day. The highly anticipated Spirit Day is here! Students should bring their school materials in anything but a backpack. These items need to be safe, clean, and portable. Some examples include shopping bins, suitcases, or cereal boxes depending on how many materials you need. We will also have a competition so make sure to send in pictures of students with creative containers! Fill out the form to enter a submission into the competition here

Thursday - Comfy Cozy Day. Traditional spirit day, students wear their most comfortable clothes and pajamas to school.

Friday - Candy Cane DayStudents wear as much red and white to school as possible! They should remember to grab their free candy cane on their way to break!!

WHS Sporting Events - Spectator Mask Requirement

With winter sport season underway, a reminder that due to the legal mandate, masks that cover the mouth and nose must be worn in all indoor settings and at outdoor events with 500 or more people regardless of vaccination status. This legal mandate includes spectators at WHS sporting events. We appreciate and thank all students, parents, guardians, and guests, in advance, for keeping safety at the forefront by adhering to the requirement. 

We love the spirit our community contributes supporting and cheering on the Falcons. We hope this measure will play a part in continuing that tradition while also keeping our schools open and our students, families, and community healthy.

WHS ASB Annual Holiday Food Drive!

Through December 17
The WHS ASB Annual Holiday Food Drive is underway! Thank you for the donations made so far!

Students can drop off their donations at their 3rd period classrooms fthrough Friday, December 17.

Donations need to be shelf-stable, non-perishable food items (no cash donations).

Students can earn Honor Society hours for their donations (1 hour for every 20 items donated, with a maximum of 2 hours). Students can bring their Honor Society Service Log, which teachers may sign directly. Top Ramen, Cup of Noodles, and water do not count!

The 3rd period with the most food by December 17th will earn a free breakfast provided by admin!

ASB is very excited to "Can the Man" by filling Mr. Criscione's office with the items! The food will then be donated to the Maltby Food Bank again this year so donations will go to families in our very own local community.

Mental Health Resources
Covid got you down: Ryan Rogulich, our Mental Health Counselor, is available. Please contact your counselor to get a referral. We encourage you to keep in touch with your emotions and reach out for help. Your loved ones, friends, teachers, and counselors can all support you right now. Your Woodinville High School counseling team is here for you. If you are worried about a friend, please be the one to reach out and get them the help they might need.

Northshore Nourishing Network
Is a website that lists local food banks, pantries, and community meal information. They help individuals and families who are facing food insecurity to find local and regional food resources, and help people who have food and resources to get them to the people in need.

Students please don’t forget you can drop-in to the school counseling office any day before/after school, during Options or during your lunch. We are always happy to see you. If you need an appointment and a different time, feel free to schedule a time to meet here.

Register! Important Forefront Suicide Prevention Training Webinary for Parents and Guardians: Thurs, December 9th

Please join us on Thursday, December 9th from 6:00-7:30pm for a suicide prevention webinar training. Please fill out the registration link below to attend. All NSD high school parents/caregivers are welcome.  (Students and children do not attend.)

This training is important for the support of your child and their friends.

Parent/Caregiver Suicide Prevention Training Registration: 

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 14-24 in Washington and the United States. Many suicides are preventable! Mental health problems among young adults are more common than many families realize. Parents and family members sometimes struggle to understand their student’s mental health concerns—or even to recognize that their student is in distress. Learning that their student is having suicidal thoughts can create extreme stress for the family. This training provides resources to help parents and families support those who are struggling with their mental wellness.

Senior Grad Ads:

Grad Ads are up and running. What is a Grad Ad? Well it’s space in the Senior Section of the Yearbook you purchase where you can applaud your child’s achievements with a tribute for them, celebrate with words of congratulations, praise and encouragement.  You can also add the pictures we wouldn’t take in the Senior Portrait section, with animals, props etc. Please click the link to purchase Balfour Grad Ad Link. They go off sale on Dec. 17th at Midnight, Pacific Time. Once it is past this date, there is nothing I can do. I am sorry it's done and I can't do anything to change it.

Steps to purchase an ad:
  1. Log in using the above link. Ads are purchased online through Balfour only.
  2. Sign in using your child's name, I think you have to also create an account giving Balfour an email address. Please be sure to use an address that you regularly use/read. Once you purchase the ad, you will be sent a link to use to upload your pictures and words. This does not always come right away, it may take a day before confirmation of purchase happens. And confirmation of purchase is actually the email containing your link to create your ad. You do not need to complete the ad on the same day you purchase it, you will have until January 3, 2022 to complete the ad.
  3. We ask that you don’t create your ad using Photoshop or any other photo editing software. They don’t transfer well. Please use the tools provided. We want to be sure that you understand that we will change the fonts on the ads to match those we use in the book as well as any colored backgrounds. We want the Senior Ad section to go along with the theme of the book. We want it pretty :-). Wingspan also reserves the right to edit ads based on school policy and yearbook guidelines. We will contact you if we need to change anything drastically.
  4. You will get a preview of the ad before you submit, if you want to keep that preview you need to screenshot it. Unless it’s changed from last year once the preview is gone you won’t see it again until the book comes out. Unfortunately we can’t spare the time to send you another preview, there is just so much to do once January comes, I am so sorry. :-(
  5. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me.
  6. If your questions have to do with the site you have to contact Balfour directly at 1-800-944-5930. Again, please remember they are Pacific Standard Time (the plant is in Texas.)

Student Celebrations!

The Falcon Debate team competed at the Bellevue HS debate tournament last weekend! 

Our students did incredibly well!
Here are the results:
  • Eileen Miller- Semi-finalist in Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, 4th best speaker in Novice LD debate
  • Jiya Joshi- Quarter finalist in Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, 2nd best speaker in Novice LD debate, finalist in Novice Impromptu speaking
  •  Mariam Kazmi- Quarter finalist in Open Lincoln Douglas, 5th best speaker in Open LD debate
  • Tessa Han- Quarter finalist in Novice Public Forum debate, best speaker in novice PF debate
  • Samikshaa Prabhu- 4th best speaker in Novice Public Forum debat
  • Tori Kirchmeier- Quarter finalist in Novice Public Forum debat
  • Jackson Kelly- Quarter finalist in Open Public Forum debat

In addition to the above students, we also had several students who almost broke to quarter finals or won some of the preliminary rounds in their events.

Our kids were on campus competing on Friday after school until 9:00 p.m. that night. They came back to school Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and continued competing until about 8:00 p.m.
Please congratulate these students on a job well done. We had the more entries than we have ever had in this tournament.

NHS Toy Drive 12/13-17

Hey falcons!
Woodinville National Honor Society is holding a toy drive for the holidays from December 13th to 17th! Toys will be donated to Northshore, Lake Washington, and YMCA families. Toys should be for newborns or children under the age of 12. Items should be new, unopened, and unwrapped. Items also need to be school and family friendly (no weapon related toys).
2 large toys or 4 small toys is equivalent to one hour of community service and students can earn a maximum of two hours of service for this drive. 
All donations will be collected in Mr. Tanksley’s room (room 410) from 7:50-8:20 am on December 13th-17th. An NHS officer will be present to count donations and sign off hour sheets. We look forward to seeing your participation!

PTSA Pass-the-Hat fundraiser!

Thank you for giving to PTSA’s fundraiser, Pass-the-Hat! We are halfway to our $9,000 goal thanks to your generosity. If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, this is the perfect way to make a difference. All your tax-deductible donations will be used to support and enrich our school community and classrooms this year. You will be helping PTSA fulfill staff grant requests for classroom supplies and support materials such as books, art supplies, science lab support, musical equipment, counseling center supplies and special needs materials, just to name a few. WHS Main Office is seeking Copy Brigade Volunteers!

The Main Office is looking to fill spots for the Copy Brigade.  The Copy Brigade program focuses on ten or more regularly committed volunteers making photocopies, laminating items submitted to the Main Office Copy Center by faculty and staff, as well as providing assistance keeping the work room copy center organized. Regular, committed volunteers are needed Monday through Friday for a 2-hour window between 8:20 - 12:20 p.m.

Volunteers who are able to commit to regular and consistent participation are key to the effectiveness of this program. Volunteers are encouraged to team up in pairs and, for example, volunteer every other Tuesday, alternating with their partner.  Then, if a Tuesday volunteer can’t make it, her or his alternating Tuesday partner may be able to swap days and fill in.  In the event a Work Room Copy Center volunteer is unable to make it on their specified day and a back-up person cannot be located, the Main Office Secretary is contacted so alternate arrangements can be made for that day.

Please note:  All NSD volunteers complete a mandatory volunteer training, background check, and submit proof of vaccination prior to volunteering. Volunteers must wear masks.

Women of Influence Club Seeking Donations for April Conference

Women of Influence Club is hosting our third annual Women of Influence Leadership Conference at the end of April. This conference will connect aspiring Woodinville High School students to influential female leaders. The conference will include a panel discussion of eight highly accomplished women in diverse occupations, followed by small round table discussions accompanied by a catered meal.

The goal of this conference is to empower young leaders by giving them an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with professional women in a variety of industries.

In order to stay true to our values of equity and inclusivity, and to give our attendees the best experience possible, our goal is to make this conference free of any cost.

Attendance Absences & PCR Covid-19 Result Requirement

Due to high email and call volumes: if you are reporting your child absent from school due to any of the symptoms listed below for any period of time, they are required to get a NAAT, RT-PCR or PCR test prior to return to school. Reference the King County Return to School Flow Chart NSD follows below.  
  • Fever of 100.4°F or 38°C or higher 
  • Cough 
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

The COVID Handbook has been updated and reflects NSD's current practices. Please read through this information carefully so that we can work together to keep our students, staff, and families safe. Attendance & Early Dismissals
Our student day is from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and WHS expects all students to attend school every day.  Below are a few highlights of our attendance policy and procedures:
  • Absences must be excused within two (2) school days of the absence or students will be assigned progressive discipline.
  • Ten hours of excused and/or unexcused absences in a semester in a given class may result in going through the Attendance Validation process.
  • When a student accumulates three (3) or more days of unexcused absences it will result in a conference with administration.
  • If a student misses more than 15 minutes of class, it is considered an absence
  • If a student requires an early dismissal, the student needs to come to the Attendance Office before school or during Options with a parent/guardian signed request. We are no longer accepting phone calls or emails for early dismissal to limit classroom interuptions.
  • Students who arrive late to school (both excused and unexcused) must check in at the Attendance Office for a pass before proceeding to class.

Fee Waivers for Students

Pursuant to House Bill 1660, students who are qualified for free/reduced meals may have extra-curricular/activity fees waived by completing a fee waiver consent form located on the NSD website under the heading of Reduced or Waived School Fees at:  Qualified families are encouraged to complete the waiver form. Information about House Bill 1660 can be found on the WHS website under Resources, Payments/TouchBase. Basic Needs Aid
When a family is in crisis and normal household activities are disrupted, students experience distress that affects their attendance, coursework and classroom behavior. NSF's Basic Needs Aid Fund allows families to stock up on groceries or fill the car with fuel so that they can direct their energy where it is most needed: finding a permanent solution to the situation at hand (

Apply for Funds

For WHS students, contact Counselor and CARE Team member Sarah Brenner at and/or your student’s school counselor or grade-level administrator to describe the temporary challenge or circumstance and request support. All NSF funding requests must come from an approved school staff member.

The NSD staff member will then submit your request.

Foundation leadership will review the request within 5 days and contact the NSD staff that submitted the request with details.
