Welcome, Sophia!

Sophia Ratajczak is a new program assistant in the Office of Annual Giving. A proud local, she grew up in Gig Harbor, received her B.A. in communications from UW Tacoma, and worked at the Tacoma Art Museum before joining Puget Sound in March. She looks forward to meeting more of the campus community soon.

DID YOU KNOW? Ancient Hawaiians, relying on songs, or mele, to pass their stories from generation to generation, used lyric and movement to tell of Hawai`i’s gods and heroes, traditions, and customs. After American missionaries banned the practice, it was members of the ali`i, Hawai`i’s ruling class, who reintroduced hula to the Hawaiian people.

Harold Moss Hon.’09 has been heavily involved in Tacoma’s civic life for more than five decades, including as the city’s first black mayor. In the 1950s, he was another African American man facing discrimination when he tried to buy a home. Harold talks about his personal experiences with redlining in Tacoma.
