Residing in the heart of the campus on the first floor of Howarth Hall, the Center for Writing & Learning supports students of all disciplines in their growth as students and learners.
The CWL offers one-on-one and small-group appointments Sunday–Friday. Peer tutors are selected through a competitive application process, and take part in extensive professional training. They work with all students, ranging from students in 100-level classes to those finishing their senior theses.
The CWL offers appointments with:
|
-
Writing and Speaking Advisors, who guide students through every stage of the writing or speaking process for assignments in any discipline
- Subject Tutors, who support students in the languages and STEM disciplines
- Academic Consultants, who help students develop organizational and study strategies for all their classes
-
Language Partners, who work with multilingual students to help them navigate the conventions and quirks of academic English writing
- Co-Readers, who help expand students’ disciplinary-specific reading skills
- Faculty Consultants, who work with both students and alumni to develop personal statements for various postgraduate opportunities
|
Students can visit the CWL website or Howarth 105 to make an appointment, or they can stop by during the center's drop-in hours.

Would your Logger student benefit from an alumni mentor? It’s time to sign up for the Logger Link Matched Mentorship Program. This program is available to students of all class years, so encourage your student to attend an info session to learn more!
Alumni mentors know what it's like to be a Logger student, and they are perfectly positioned to mentor. They are ready to provide a listening ear, sage career advice, and to become a part of your student's network.
As a part of the program, students will:
|
-
Attend an information session that’s designed to set them up for success as a mentee.
- View mentor profiles and indicate their preferred matches.
- Be matched with one Logger alum for the full school year.
- Meet with their mentor at least once per month. We provide guided conversation topics if they’re not sure where to start.
|
Your student can attend an information session on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. or Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in Howarth 203. Attending an information session is required to participate in the matched program.

Logger Wellbeing Week is Sept. 29–Oct. 3, featuring events centered on a core idea: that health is a community endeavor, not just an individual pursuit. The week is designed to connect students with a variety of campus resources and highlight the 10 dimensions of wellness: physical, intellectual, cultural, environmental, spiritual, social, professional, emotional, creative, and financial.
The week’s activities also serve as a lead-in to October’s Substance Misuse Prevention Month. The university’s approach to substance use is based on a framework of harm reduction and prevention, with the goal of increasing safety for the entire community.
For parents and families wanting to support their student, new materials called Parent KITE Chats are being piloted to assist in conversations about alcohol use with their students. These materials, which include talking points and basic facts on college drinking, are accessible online and will be supplemented with reminder postcards and emails in late September and late October.

Support for Pre-Health Students
|
If your student is considering a career in the healthcare industry, the Health Professions Advising (HPA) office will be an integral part of their Puget Sound journey. The breadth and depth of advising support that Puget Sound provides for pre-health students are exceptional and extend to alumni indefinitely. The HPA staff's work is similar to that of a career Counselor, college counselor, and school counselor — all rolled into one. Regardless of class standing, or level of certainty regarding career plans, all pre-health students should meet with a Health Professions Advisor at least once per term.
With the HPA office conveniently located in Thompson Hall, it’s easy for students to stop by for quick questions. All pre-health students receive a weekly e-newsletter every Tuesday during the academic year, and students are encouraged to review it closely for important dates, events, and opportunities. The HPA webpage includes a wealth of information, including volunteer opportunities, clinical experiences, an events calendar, application support guidance, and more.
The pre-health journey is long, with many moving parts, but Loggers are not expected to navigate the journey alone. Parents are always welcome to contact Health Professions Advisor Nova Fergueson at nfergueson@pugetsound.edu or 253.879.2708.
