Life Lessons of a 'Dutch Farmboy'

In 1968, when he was 20, Louis Slangen ’69 left his family’s farm in the Netherlands for America. He brought along two suitcases, $200, and a game plan. After spending his senior year as an exchange student at the University of Puget Sound, his plan was to go on to earn an MBA, work in the United States for a few years, and return to the Netherlands. But the best laid plans often go awry — and sometimes, he says, they turn out even better.

The National Coalition for Sexual Health recently recognized Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services (CHWS) for its use of the coalition's Own the Awk campaign at this year's SEX Fest. Own the Awk is a campaign to spark conversations, engage students, and make awkward sexual health and relationship topics more approachable. The coalition highlighted CHWS' work in a recent newsletter as a model for how to start these important conversations with college students.

At Puget Sound, our scholar-athletes succeed in competition and in the classroom. So, it's no surprise that several Loggers were recognized for their academic achievements this season, including members of the Logger Men's Basketball team and the Logger Men's and Women's Swim teams.

Distinguished Alumni Awards
|
The deadline to submit your nominations for Puget Sound's Distinguished Alumni Awards is approaching. We're looking for alumni who have made incredible contributions in their professions, their communities, and at their alma mater. The Alumni Council Executive Committee seeks to honor individuals whose achievements and service stand out, and we need your help.
To ensure these remarkable contributions are recognized, please submit your nominations by Saturday, Aug. 1.
Award recipients will be featured in Arches and celebrated during Summer Reunion Weekend in June 2027. We especially encourage nominations of alumni celebrating class reunions ending in 2 and 7, though all alumni are eligible. Alumni are also welcome to nominate themselves. For more than 35 years, Puget Sound has offered the Summer Academic Challenge program, a tuition-free, four-week enrichment program for students in grades 7 to 12, exploring real-world issues through an innovative, project-based STEAM curriculum. Students participating in the program gain confidence, expand their interests, and build the skills to meet their long-term academic goals. As part of the program, students participate in field trips, including a recent visit to the boat shop at the Foss Waterway Seaport on the Tacoma waterfront.
