A message from the City Manager
|
Late last month, I delivered my notice of retirement from the City of Vancouver to city council. As a long-time resident of the Vancouver community, I care deeply about our growing, vibrant and welcoming City. My 17 years with the City – 14 as City Manager – have been the richest, most rewarding of my career. Read my full update to learn about our plans to launch a national search for my successor before I officially retire this October.

An update on Vancouver's Homelessness Emergency
|
|
|
Since declaring a state of emergency related to homelessness in November, our work to address this humanitarian crisis and its impacts on all of us remains the City’s top priority.
Key actions in January - early February:
Our Homeless Assistance and Resources Team (HART) welcomed Vancouver Police Corporal Sean Metevia as a HART Officer and Tiffini Dillard as our second Outreach Specialist.
We conducted clean-ups to address sanitation and safety concerns around Share House (115 W. 13th St.), along the E. Mill Plain sound wall and on N.E. Campus Drive.
On Feb. 13, we closed two publicly owned property sites off of N.E. 112th Ave. to camping and outdoor habitation.

| Bridge shelter planned for 2024
We’re working to identify a location to open a bridge shelter this year. The shelter would provide up to 150 people experiencing homelessness with a place to stay and supportive services to “bridge” the space between living outside and the next step on their journey to permanent housing.

Slide into spring break at new playgrounds
|
Last week, we opened a new playground at Van Vleet Park in the Northwood neighborhood. The park features a forest critter theme, with nature-inspired play equipment and a friendly bear cub and beaver play statue. Next week, we’ll open another new playground at Columbia Lancaster Park in the Northcrest neighborhood. This playground features a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) theme, with interactive electronic game panels, musical instruments and more.
Coming soon
Construction of a new Oakbrook Park playground will kick off later this year.
