Message from Carmen Holzman
Vice President of Area Management, WRJ Northeast District

In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest unto you, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of the shofar, a holy convocation”
- Leviticus 23:23
This month we transition from summer to fall, a welcome change to cooler days and the observance of the High Holy Days – Rosh Hashanah (beginning of the year 5778) and Yom Kippur. One of the High Holy Days rituals that I look forward to the most is hearing the impressive sound of the shofar. The sounding of the shofar can have many different meanings, according to Midrash.
The sound of the shofar calls us to remember the commandments. Even though we hear this sound only on the High Holy Days, it is a sound that we can carry in our hearts all year round.
When you hear it, what do you think of?
  • A spiritual alarm clock awakening you from summer laziness?

  • A reminder to repent for mistakes, and apologize to those we have hurt?

  • A time to celebrate family traditions – festive meals, a slice of challah, dipped in honey as a hope for a sweet year to come?

  • A reflection of what we have done during the past year and how we can do better in the coming year?

  • Do we hear a reminder that every day is a blessing? Filled with opportunities to start fresh – to live a better life, and use the talents we have to the best of our ability?

Let’s begin our New Year 5778 by signing up to attend the Northeast WRJ Kallah where we will study, connect and celebrate life under the theme “B’Tzelem Elohim” (in God’s image).
May the coming year bring you and your family health, happiness, and the blessing of peace.
“L’Shanah Tovah Tikatevu - May you be inscribed - in the book of life - for a good year.”

Hate Has No Home Here
One person can make a difference! Read about Joanna Herrera, a member of the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom (Needham, MA), and the impact she has made on her community.

In the Spring of 2017, a close college friend who lives in Evanston, IL, had seen Hate Has No Home Here signs spread throughout her neighborhood and suggested I start a local group in Needham. The HHNHH project originated in the North Park neighborhood of Chicago and has spread worldwide. A third grader and kindergartner imagined the phrase used in the sign; the two children boldly declared: “hate has no home here.” I decided to start a local group because I feel passionately about diversity and tolerance. The Women of SSTTE are Collectors... For Others
Social action is a strong component of activities at Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El (SSTTE). The Women of SSTTE are participating in three important collections.
They have kicked off the year with their annual School Supply Drive. Women are encouraged to take advantage of the great summer sales; supplies are collected for an underserved school in Yonkers, NY. The sisterhood has partnered with the same school for several years and supplied it with hundreds of items.  Click here to read about SSTTE's other important collections.
Please contact me by email at mhwh@optonline.net or ssttewomen@sstte.org if you would like further information.
