Flu Vaccine Clinic

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is offering flu vaccine clinics to support faculty, staff, and students in meeting the flu shot requirement authorized by the UT Board of Trustees in accordance with new university guidelines.

A reservation system and physical distancing practices will be utilized to align with University-wide policies during the flu vaccine clinics.

CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. Getting a flu vaccine during 2020-2021 will be more important than ever.

Flu vaccines will not prevent COVID-19, but they will reduce the burden of flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths on the health care system and conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people with COVID-19. Visit CDC's website for more information about flu vaccine benefits.

Healthy Lifestyles

Be Well is kicking off round two of Healthy Lifestyles this month!

Healthy Lifestyles is a 6 week evidence-based program adapted from the CDC's Diabetes Prevention Program. This program aims to help UT personnel create healthier lifestyles through physical activity, proper nutrition, and healthy habits. In the lunch and learn style sessions, participants will learn about the current recommendations for areas of health and wellness. Participants will set and work to achieve individual goals based on their current levels of engagement. Over the course of the program, participants will learn skill sets that will help them meet their goals and adopt a healthy lifestyle as part of their daily routines.

Healthy Lifestyle general sessions are open to all UTK employees. Be Well will continue to provide Healthy Lifestyles to departments upon request.

General Session #2: [Wednesdays] October 7th - November 11th/ 12pm-1pm

Individuals who participate in the entirety of the program will be eligible to receive a $10 grubhub gift card and $20 amazon gift card.

Run for Rocky Top

UTK Alumni is hosting the inaugural Run for Rocky Top on October 16--18--the week of the Kentucky vs. Tennessee football game. Choose to either walk or run a distance of your choice, in any location, all while supporting scholarships for UT students. You may also register your Little Vols in the family package option! Little Vols age 17 and under are free.

Family Run for Rocky Top Package--$50

Spectator Run for Rocky Top Package--minimum $10

Vols who are not able to participate in the run/walk can still support student scholarships by participating in our spectator package which includes a donation amount of your choice (minimum donation of $10).

Virtual Nutrition Lunch & Learns

The world of nutrition can be confusing and overwhelming at times as new research is always emerging. That's why Be Well and the Nutrition Department have teamed up to launch a series of lunch and learns this fall to help make your journey to healthy eating a little easier.

Virtual lunch and learn sessions will kick off on Friday, October 2nd from noon-1pm and be held every Friday through November 6th. Sessions will be facilitated by current students earning their degrees in nutrition, with supervision provided by Karen Wetherall, Sr. Lecturer and Dietetic Internship Director at UTK.

Virtual Healthy Cooking Class

We had so many employees participate in our healthy cooking class last month that we are now going to be offering even more food-kits for October's class! The first 35 indivdiuals to register for October's class will be eligilbe for a free food-kit. If you miss out on a food-kit you can still participate in the zoom class as recipes and shopping lists will be sent out ahead of time.

This month Chef Jeff Ross from Blackberry Farm will be preparing poached grouper in butter with fingerling potatoes. In additional there will be a special demonstration on how to make fig mostarda.

Weight Loss Program for Families

Did you know that 38% of children and 67% of adults in Tennessee have overweight or obesity? The Healthy Eating and Activity Laboratory (HEAL) in the Department of Nutrition is providing an option to help families lose weight together, right on campus!

HEAL has a grant from the National Institutes for Health to provide a medically recommended program for families to help children and their parents get to a healthier weight. This program is called Families Becoming Healthy Together! Families Becoming Healthy Together provides 18 months of support to families and is provided at no cost. This is the only evidenced-based childhood overweight and obesity treatment program in the greater Knoxville area. The program is designed so that both the parent and the child can lose weight!

If you are at least 18 years old and are 20-75 pounds away from your ideal weight, and have a child between the ages of 8-12 years, you may be eligible to partake in this research study. Call (865)974-0752 and ask about Families Becoming Healthy Together.

Be Mindful

Massage therapy has been around for hundreds of years and has been prescribed for a wide range of medical conditions. Research has shown that massage therapy can be helpful for a number of situations, but more specifically it has been shown as an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, and muscle tension.

Be Well has recently partnered with the TN School of Therapeutic Massage to give UTK employees greater access to affordable massage services. On the first Tuesday of every month, UTK employees can receive a 1-hour full body Swedish massage for only $25. Spots are limited, so hurry to take advantage of this offer on October 6th.

Everyone in the building is expected to wear face masks, the industry's cleaning standards haven't changed much with COVID. The TN School of Therapeutic Massage does not have use of the lobby at the moment, but have covered outside seating set up 6' apart. Upon entering, everyone's temperature will be checked. Therapists wash hands before and after each session. New sets of linens are used with each client and staff are making sure to clean/ sterilize everything between all appointments.

Wellness Warrior

The Wellness Warrior Award is given to individuals across campus who are nominated by their peers for leading by example and inspiring through action as they work to create a healthier lifestyle.

The Wellness Warrior award for the month of October is awarded to Christine Smith. Christine is the Assistant Director of Enrollment Management Communications. She has been apart of the UT family for a little over 5 years. Some of her favorite hobbies include CrossFit, weightlifting, home decorating and renovation, and crafting.

We asked Christine what inspires her to make healthy choices and live a healthy lifestyle and she explained that facing adversity and struggling with health concerns throughout her life motivated her to make health conscious choices. "The pursuit of an overall health and wellness driven lifestyle has allowed me to experience many variations of physical activity and ultimately led me to CrossFit -exercise that is centered around functional movements which are used in daily life." Christine enjoys the diversity of workouts, but the community is what keeps her going back for more.

One of Christine's greatest success stories that she shared with us is when she came in 2nd place in the women's standard diision for Row'd Royalty as a team member for CrossFit Ktown. The worldwide annual indoor rowing competition spans 4 weeks and includes a variety of workouts. "I got to see my name atop the leaderboard next to Samantha Briggs [female winner of the 2013 CrossFit Games] who scored 2nd in the women's tall division.

Congratulations Christine, and thank you for being a model of health and wellness on UT's Campus.
