To kick off the new school year, Interim Associate Dean of Students and Director of New Student & Family Programs Ben Adams, wrote a welcome letter to all Duke Families.

Dear Duke Families and Parents-
First, to the parents and families of the Class of 2026, welcome to the Duke Family! Though many of you live across the country and around the world, you are an important part of this community and we welcome you. To the returning parents and families, welcome to the 2022-2023 academic year!
Our office believes that a supportive network of family and friends at home is valuable to the success of Duke students. As part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and informed community among new Duke students and families, the Office of New Student and Family Programs will provide these monthly newsletters which highlight the many resources and opportunities available to your students. We hope this resource will help you encourage and support them from wherever you are around the globe.
We will also use this newsletter to highlight special invitations to you as families. Which leads me to remind you that Family Weekend is soon approaching. This exciting weekend will be held October 14-16 and is a great opportunity for you to visit your student and learn more about the Duke experience. Details and the registration site can be found here. We hope to see you in Durham!
On behalf of the Duke community, thank you for the many ways you support your student and our university.
GO DUKE!
Ben Adams, T ‘08

Career Everywhere
What is a Career Community? Career Communities are a way for students to connect with people, information, and resources while exploring interests and potential opportunities. We know a Duke degree is valuable across various sectors and industries, and an academic major doesn’t limit anyone to a specific job type or field. Now is the time for students to explore what the world of work has to offer. We encourage your student to explore and follow any career communities that align with their interests, goals, and future plans.
Six of our career communities focus on a broad industry sector. For students who are unsure of their interests, undecided on which interests to pursue, or generally curious, the Discovery & Exploration community was designed with them in mind. The best approach is to explore broadly by browsing several career communities of interest and understanding most skills are transferrable to many career pathways.
This fall we have updated our career communities, combining some, better organizing others and/or just renaming to be more transparent. Students can join and follow these career communities:
Get insider knowledge about careers. Here are just a few of the benefits of following a career community:
- Jobs, internships, research, and volunteer opportunities curated for members of the community
- Announcements of professional development opportunities, events, and career fairs targeted at those communities
- Featured blog posts with tips from career advisors, alumni and student success stories, insider info from employers, and other helpful resources
- Community subgroups with recommended tools for exploring careers, networking, researching employers, searching for internships and jobs, and more
