This week, we are delighted to spotlight Samantha Silver, a PhD candidate in the Department of American Studies! Samantha received her BA in American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 2012 with a concentration in Mass Culture and Urban History after transferring from UC Santa Cruz, where she first read Fredric Jameson and took courses in American popular music. After working at several non-profits, she received her MA in American Studies at GW and began her PhD in 2018. In 2019, she worked at NPR Music as a research fellow for the “Turning the Tables” project in which Silver contributed to “8 Women Who Invented American Popular Music.” Silver says she is proud to have moved back to California with her siblings in 2020 to take care of her grandfather, where she met her now husband Brett, before coming back to DC and continuing her PhD.
Samantha’s MA research focused on radio history and “amateur hour” radio broadcasts during the Great Depression. She was able to use the Library of Congress’ collections at the Recorded Sound Research Center. Sam remains fascinated with audio archives and hopes to write more about amateur hours in relation to the comedy open mic. Her dissertation focuses on unknown figures in the history of stand-up comedy, especially Black women blues singers and queer drag performers whose comedy albums and live performances tell a different story about the art form. She collected several stand-up comedy albums by comedians Hattie Noel, Rusty Warren, and others during the COVID-19 quarantine to keep her research going.

Her interdisciplinary research combines media history, performance studies, Black feminist theory, queer theory, and popular music studies to illuminate the stories behind these albums, their place in the history of American comedy, and the complex relationship between comedy, race, sexuality, and politics. Samantha will present her research on blues singer and comedian Hattie Noel at upcoming conferences including the popular music conference Pop Con at NYU, the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) conference in Niagara Falls, NY, and the American Humor Studies Association (AHSA) conference at Skidmore College. As a Board Member of the American Humor Studies Association, she will chair the Humor Studies panel at the American Literature Association (ALA). Sam is also active in the Humor and Comedy Studies groups of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) and the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR).
