This fabulously entertaining Parents' Association event benefits Breakthrough Santa Fe and tuition assistance at Santa Fe Prep—both of which are critical to providing unparalleled educational opportunities for young people in northern New Mexico.

It's not the movie. It's not the sequel. It's MAMMA MIA: THE MUSICAL! It came first (well, after Abba) and is, by far, the best iteration of this timeless classic. You do not want to miss this cast of 26 featuring Raffi Mark '21 as Donna, Tabatha Hirsch '20 as daughter Sophie, and Donna's fun-loving friends played by Sophia Koople '20, Hannah Koople '20 and Eliza HIllenkamp '19. Playing Sophie's potential fathers are Rowan Dwyer '20, Urian Vasquez '21, and Gabe Falkner '19—find out who's who on opening night on Friday, March 1 at 7:00 pm. Additional performances are Saturday, March 2 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, March 3 at 2:00 pm.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT
The Santa Fe Prep History Department and the Santa Fe Council on International Relations are excited to host the 3rd annual Policy Simulation on Thursday, February 7. The simulation begins in the year 2025 when the world is rocked by a series of global environmental disasters. As energy officials and leaders in developing regions, participants will debate, negotiate, and draft resolutions on how to respond to these natural calamities.  Prep students will work alongside young people from Santa Fe High School and Desert Academy. The simulation is sponsored by PNM.
ATHLETICS
The Blue Griffin Swimmers just completed the 2019 Griffin Invitational Swim Meet. The girls finished an impressive 5th place out of 18 teams, with notable performances from Sophia Gossum '20, who won the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle races; Chelsea Griscom '21, who finished 3rd in the 100 breastroke and 200 individual medley; and Arielle Nathan '19, who took 3rd place in the 100 backstroke. The boys qualified all their relays for state and won the 200-freestyle relay with strong swims by Reed Kellam '19, Jordan Kinlaw '19, Vineet Narayanan '19, and Nico Roth '23. Cheer them on this Saturday at the district at the GCCC.

The Varsity Basketball teams are midway through the district season. Amid injuries and illness, the boys are hanging in and have their sights on their first victory in the coming weeks. The girls have improved immensely throughout the season and posted their first district victory against Raton's JV last week.

Both the 7th and 8th Grade Boys Middle School teams went undefeated in preseason pool play. The 8th grade team qualified for first division and is working toward their first win; the 7th grade team qualified for second division and sits on a 1-3 record thus far.

Congratulations to the Fencing Team in qualifying three individuals for the upcoming Junior Olympics. John Allison '21, Liam Zone '21, and Reilly Brislawn '22  will represent the Blue Griffins over the February 15th weekend at the National Championships in Denver. Good Luck, fencers!

BREAKTHROUGH SANTA FE
Parents making a case for their candidate to be admitted to Jefferson University.
Breakthrough Santa Fe and the Davis New Mexico Scholarship hosted College Admissions Case Studies for juniors from around the city. This annual event brings together college admissions counselors, students, and parents for an educational event that helps students—almost all of whom will be the first in their families to earn a college degree—and their families understand the ins and outs of applying to college. Participants in the case study roleplay as admissions counselors for the fictional "Jefferson University," and are forced to make decisions about whether to admit students based on the school's priorities and fictional student applications. This year, we had over 100 people in attendance, and we were joined by representatives from University of Denver, University of Portland, Lawrence University, Southwestern University, Miami University of Ohio, Colorado College, and St. Edward's University
Meet Melissa Hernandez Lopez ! When Melissa first watched Breakthrough’s video as a 6th grader, she was excited about how fun and interactive the program looked. Be it a science experiment or a great book, Melissa loves to become absorbed by a project. During her first Breakthrough summer, Melissa got the opportunity to do just that—especially in her Journalism elective. Stepping behind the camera, Melissa helped capture some of the most exciting moments of the Breakthrough summer. She could often be spotted barely holding in a bout of laughter while filming a peer’s hilarious interview.

Melissa’s other passion project is basketball—when not practicing with her team, she is likely reading stats on the Golden State Warriors. With the same discipline that she shows on the court, Melissa works hard in her 7th grade classes to get prepared for a future career as a veterinarian or lawyer. Although her goals may change, Melissa’s drive for success ensures that her future will be a slam dunk!
IN THE ARTS
Fine Arts Department Chair Alex Peña's artwork (left) has been published in Re-Riding History: From the Southern Plains to the Matanzas Baypart of a nationwide exhibition curated and shown at many museums across the country. Invited artists were asked to respond to the forced removal of Natives and imprisonment at Fort Marion, Fl. Both Native and non-Natives were invited to be in the exhibition.

Alex shares, "In creating my piece for 'Re-Riding History,' I placed myself in the moment of the displaced Indians while they were undergoing their travails, and imagined what their perception of place was. Prisoners drew references to place, including animals on prairies but also trains and non-Native structures. The only thing that would help me endure if I were in their situation would be to reflect on certain elements of my original place that brought comfort and belonging. The tree in my piece operates as this element of place but is obscured as the Indian prisoners’ reflections were obscured through their uncertain experience."
Alex has donated a copy of this publication to the Santa Fe Prep Library.
Ceramics and Experimental Media teacher Laura Scandrett has work on exhibition this month in Bangkok, Thailand, including her video "Gum Stains," which will be shown on a screen installed in the back of a Tuk Tuk (right).
TAP PROJECTS
The Convergence Project TAP is excited to announce its third annual OASIS BLACKLIGHT PARTY, Friday, February 15, 8:00 pm to midnight at Meow Wolf. Featuring teen DJs and musicians from the Santa Fe area, this event is a combination of rave, dance party, and concert. Non-toxic body paint and glitter will be provided by Convergence. The Oasis Blacklight Party is only one of several for teen, by teen events Convergence will host in 2019.

A for youth, by youth organization working to create opportunities for teenage artists, Convergence events are designed, produced, promoted, and fundraised by teenage volunteers with the purpose of building community, providing creative spaces, and supporting high school artists, musicians, dancers, writers, and entrepreneurs. The performing arts aspect of the Convergence Project specifically focuses on hosting affordable concerts and other performing arts based events open to all youth.

The "Team Sheen" TAP is hosting a Diaper Drive this month. Led by faculty Sheena Chakeres, this TAP initiative coordinates various projects throughout the year to support a number of organizations in the Santa Fe community that serve those in need. Join them in their goal of collecting 200 packages of diapers and wipes!

GRIFFIN
SHOUT OUTS
The Santa Fe Prep Chess Team competed in their final meet of the year at a three-day tournament for the Northern Schools Chess League last month. Congratulations to the team for bringing home a 3rd place win in the championship round for our High School A Team (Asher Nathan '23, Vineet Narayanan '19, Reilly Brislawn '22, and Hugo Underwood '22); and a 2nd place win for our Middle School A Team (Annalee Auer '24, Jack Entwisle '23, Shrey Poshiya '23, and Noah Burdick '24).

Shout out to Jack and Asher, who played 4 games in the championship round and won all 4! And to Annalee, who led the MS A team as "first seat", which means that she played all of the best middle school chess players from each team; she won 3 of 4! The Chess Club is building a strong team for the future and looks forward to many more victories to come!

For more information about Griffins Chess, please contact Mr. Reich.

Tove Shere was inducted into the New Mexico Track & Cross Country Association's Hall of Fame—the second woman ever inducted! Under Tove's leadership, the girls teams have won 21 district championships and 4 state championships in 21 years; and the boys teams have won 16 district championships and posted multiple individual state champions. Awesome news—and richly deserved; congratulations Tove! We are profoundly grateful for the work you do with our athletes!

Congratulations to Coach Dave Caldwell who has been recognized as Girls Swim and Diving Coach of the Year for the 2017-18 school year by the National Federation of State High School Coaches Association. The award recognizes coaches on the basis of career record, philosophy in athletics, community service and involvement in other school activities. You rock, Dave!
Shout out to this outdoor adventurous crew who were all smiles after successfully completing a 16-hour NOLS Wilderness First Aid Training last month! Immersed in backcountry emergency simulations, faculty and staff members Mark Bixby, Breshaun Joyner, Julia Abbiss, and Robin Koval (in sleeping bag) learned how to assess and treat everything from spinal injuries to hypothermia—integral knowledge for the safety and success of our many outdoor education programs!

EDUCATION
Why Teenagers Sometimes Lie About Homework
Has your student ever told you that he or she had completed a homework assignment when they had not? Or perhaps you were told an assignment was completed properly when it was not?
Students sometimes lie because facing the disappointment of teachers and parents and feeling dissatisfied with themselves hurts. Positive illusory bias is a term that describes the defense mechanism students use to give themselves the illusion that all is well. It gets them through the challenges and struggles of day-to-day responsibilities with their egos intact. Moreover, many students have a variety of challenges with executive skills that make it difficult to manage all the tasks they are assigned.

So what do we do? It is very upsetting when our students lie to us, but it is not helpful to respond with anger or recrimination.
Suggested steps:
1. Cool down, count to 10, go for a walk, talk it through with a partner before responding.
2. It helps to think of the lies as a survival mechanism—not a moral issue.
3. Talk it through with the student and avoid hurtful and shaming words.
4. Help the student get organized—set up homework plans with them.
5. Set aside time for homework.

6. Don't overschedule evenings and weekends.
7. Help students manage their short and long-term assignments by breaking them down into smaller steps.
8. Get help from your student's advisor, a teacher, a tutor, or me.  I love to solve homework problems!
