TONIGHT IS COLLEGE NIGHT AT PREP!

Prep’s annual College Night is tonight, February 9, 5:30-7:00 pm in the Prep Auditorium. Every year we invite an admissions officer to speak to our parents about the latest trends in college admissions and higher education and to provide some sage advice on the college search and application process. This year’s guest speaker is Tony Cabasco, Dean of Admission & Financial Aid at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. Whitman is a highly selective liberal arts college that is part of the Colleges That Change Lives consortium and a popular destination for Prep students. All Prep parents are invited, and junior parents are strongly encouraged to come as they prepare to support their child as he/she embarks on this journey of discovery.
Our parents in the past have found this presentation a very helpful overview of how to apply for financial assistance. Parents will learn about the type of information colleges are using when determining financial aid awards, what questions to ask during the search process, and how to determine good financial fit colleges.
We strongly urge any junior families contemplating applying for aid to come to this event. It is also a good time for senior parents who may have specific questions about forms they are filling out, as financial aid deadlines are rapidly approaching. And ninth and tenth grade parents, it is never too early to start thinking about how to pay for college. You will definitely feel more prepared for the process if you attend this session!

OOOM!, or Out Of Our Minds!, is our annual Middle School Poetry Reading, where our budding writers and poets share their work with friends and family and classmates. Ms. K and Brother Alan invariably inspire a plethora of young writers, and if this year is at all like previous performances, the audience will laugh, applaud, wonder, and perhaps even shed a tear or two with our readers.
There will be refreshments in the library foyer prior to the event. So please come out to support our middle schoolers. You won't be sorry you did!
ATHLETIC NEWS
Congratulations Tove Shere for earning the AAA Track Coach of the Year Award. This is on the heels of the Girls Track Team State Championship in 2015. Tove's dedication and talents continue to make the track program at Santa Fe Prep one of the best in the state.
The Griffin Swim Team hosted and competed in the District Champhionship this past weekend and there was a plethora of fantastic performances! The boys team finished 2nd and the girls finished 6th. Given the quality of the competition, it was inspiring  to have our teams finish that well. Coach Dave Caldwell has brought the swim program to a new level.
The Girls Basketball Team has been playing fantastic ball as of late, earning two victories in recent district play. Although they lost a heartbreaker to Monte Del Sol last night, they look to get back on the winning track this Thursday against Desert Academy at SFUAD's Driscoll Gymnasium at 6 pm.

The Boys Basketball Team had one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory when Francis Catillo Y Mulert '16 hit a game winning shot from half court to beat district foe ATC! The Blue Griffins will host Monte del Sol again tonight, in a very important showdown.

The Santa Fe Prep Chess Team participated in the last of three Northern Schools Chess League tournaments recently. This year, Prep fielded two qualifying teams, one in the upper school and one in the middle school. Over a span of three months, 8 students played almost 100 chess games, and in the end, our Middle School team placed 3rd and our Upper School team earned first place by winning all four of their final rounds!
Congratulations to team captain Harsh Bhundiya '16, 2nd seat Asher Nathan (a 5th grader at RGS and future Blue Griffin), and to regular chess club contributors and all around great guys Alan Rohrback '16 and Adam Melk '16!
The Presidential Scholars Program was established by Executive Order in 1964 to honor the nation's top scholars based on outstanding academic achievement.

Mike Laposata '16 is a TA in Ms. Rae's World History class this semester, where he periodically team-teaches. Last Friday, Mike taught a short lesson comparing three Roman emperors (Augustus, Constantine, and Justinian), and led a discussion on how the concept of Roman identity changes over time.
As part of Mike's Senior Internship Project (SIP) this spring, he will teach an entire week of classes on the Crusades, a favorite topic of his. After Graduation, Mike will major in history at the University of Richmond.

MONGOLIA TRIP FUNDRAISER
This July 2016, a group of 12 Prep Upper School students and two teachers, Ms. Rae and Ms. Pendleton, will travel to Mongolia, land of the eternal blue sky and Genghis Khan. They will have an opportunity to stay and work with nomad families, visit Buddhist temples, travel by camel in the Gobi Desert to see the Flaming Cliffs, and celebrate traditional Mongolian culture at the great Naadam Festival. To help defray costs for the trip, the students are running a fundraiser through FlowerPower Fundraising, which can be visited here

50% of each purchase goes directly to the students’ expenses. If you would like to help but don’t want flower bulbs, you can donate the bulbs to Prep’s Gardening TAP, run by Brother Doug Lynam. The bulbs will be planted around campus as part of that TAP’s campus beautification efforts. Thank you for your support of this once-in-a-lifetime student trip!
