Orange County Emergency Services Offers Ways to Help Hurricane Helene Recovery

Orange County Emergency Services says that the best way to help with Hurricane Helene recovery is to donate funds to reputable disaster relief organizations. The State has also opened up a disaster relief fund for donations to go to support communities recovering from Hurricane Helene.
They also advise the community to refrain from traveling to Western North Carolina unless absolutely necessary.

It is important to keep the roads available for first responders and recovery efforts. There are limited accessible roads in and out of the mountains with even fewer functional gas stations. The State Highway Patrol has established several checkpoints on main thoroughfares to enforce this effort.
Businesses with donations or volunteers should connect with the State Business Emergency Operations Center at beoc@ncdps.gov.
Community members should continue to provide cash donations to reputable voluntary agencies or the state disaster fund. They suggest donating to:

8th Annual Paint It Orange Plein Air Paint-Out and Wet Paint Sale on October 4

The 8th annual Paint It Orange Plein Air Paint Out and Wet Paint Sale will be held on Friday, October 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eno Arts Mill at 437 Dimmocks Mill Rd., #17, Hillsborough.
This year's event hosted 92 adult and 44 youth painters who have been capturing the landscapes of Orange County since September 27. An awards ceremony and preview party for artists and sponsors will take place at 5 p.m., followed by the Wet Paint Sale Party at 6 p.m. in which the submitted paintings will be available for sale to the general public.
There will be live music from Jesse Fox, food and beverages available for purchase, and kids activities. This event is free and open to the public.

Lindsey Shewmaker Promoted to Department of Social Services Director |

Lindsey Shewmaker, who has served as a Department of Social Services Human Services Manager since 2010, will succeed Nancy Coston as Orange County Social Services Director upon her retirement after 45 years of service at the end of October, Board of Social Services Chair Jane Garrett announced Tuesday, October 2, 2024.
“The Board is excited to appoint Lindsey Shewmaker as the next Social Services Director,” Garrett said. “Lindsey brings 20 years of Social Services experience in Orange County, which will make for a seamless transition.”

Orange County Animal Services is offering The Pat Sanford Animal Welfare Grant, a program to support animal welfare initiatives and projects in Orange County. The maximum award is $500.
The grant can be used for a wide range of pilot or seed projects or to supplement other programs, projects, and grants which support companion animals, including those animals used in recreation or therapy. It is available to individuals, groups, and organizations and although the recipients do not have to live in Orange County, the funds must be used to aid animal welfare efforts in Orange County.
