Jerusalem-born artist Mirna Bamieh reflects on the process of fermentation through her exhibition Sour Things, which incorporates text, ceramics, drawings, sound, and video into site-specific installations. Fermentation becomes an analogy for the nature of memory, history, change, time, and co-existence, allowing us to preserve things while also changing the thing it preserves.

The students’ project was selected from among 285 projects from 42 top universities around the world. NYU Shanghai’s exhibition space was visited by approximately 3,500 people. 


• Congratulations to NYU Shanghai faculty members whose courses have been recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in the 2024 Shanghai City Level Undergraduate Key Curriculum Program. The faculty members and their courses are: Associate Professor of Practice in Interactive Media Business (IMB) Gabrielle Chou (The Minimum Viable Product), Senior Lecturer of Chinese Language Gu Beilei (Shanghai Architecture for Chinese Language Learners), Assistant Professor of Practice in Computer Science Gu Xianbin (Introduction to Computer and Data Science), Professor of Practice in Mathematics Liu Yuning (Honors Analysis II), and Professor of Practice in Biology Yu Danyang (Human Genetics: Genes in Human Health and Diseases).


• On September 21, Assistant Arts Professor of IMA Gottfried Haider and co-artist Zhang Jie unveiled their latest exhibition at the Chronus Art Center, China's first nonprofit focused on media art. Titled “LLMscape: A Technolinguistic Exploration of Climate Narratives,” the installation will be on view at Shanghai’s M50 Contemporary Art District until October 20. The project has received kind support from the Center for AI and Culture and the Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning.

IMA student Arial Hu Ruijia ’27 expanded her DURF project into an artist installation called “Glimpsing Shadows Through the Panel,” which contributes to dialogue on the role of tradition in contemporary architecture, inspiring designers to embrace traditional patterns as a source of creativity and cultural enrichment.

Chancellor Tong Shijun’s speech to the Class of 2028 was included in Jiefang Daily’s roundup of university chancellors’ welcome speeches. He encouraged first year students to learn from their peers and better themselves.
