STS 115: The Ethics of Developing Life-Saving Technologies for Children This course explores the ethical implications of integrating new healthcare technologies, specifically in pediatric cardiac care, while teaching students to critically evaluate their impact on current practices and care quality. This course can be used to meet part of the Social Science and Humanities Program Core requirement or the Socio-Cultural requirement in Life Sciences and Health.
STS 135: Constructing and Deconstructing Artificial "Intelligence" This course critically examines the impact of AI on society by exploring the values embedded in its development, the inclusivity of its testing and regulation, the economic forces behind its growth, and its ecological footprint, while fostering an informed skepticism about how we conceptualize and name these technologies. This course meets part of the Concentration Core or Socio-Cultural requirement for Communication and Media, Innovation and Organization, Catastrophic Risks and Solutions, Politics and Policy, and Social Dynamics of Data and Information.
STS 142: Performing The Economy: Markets, Measurement, and Expertise This course explores the concept of "the economy," its historical and social underpinnings, the methodologies for measuring it, and critiques the authority of economists by examining issues like the valuation of factory work versus housework and the racial dimensions of financial instruments. This course replaces SOC 114 to meet part of the Social Science and Humanities Program Core requirement or as a Concentration Core course in Innovation and Organization.
STS 200S: Climate Politics: Science and Global Governance The course examines the historical development of climate understanding since the 1800s, the interplay between climate science and politics through the 20th century to today, and key international agreements and debates, culminating in assignments focused on presentations and research papers. This course meets the STS Capstone requirement.
STS 200V: How to Think About Catastrophe Toward a Theory of Enlightened Doomsaying This course will examine how human actions contribute to existential threats like nuclear war, climate change, and advanced technologies, integrating philosophical perspectives and the humanities to foster a deeper understanding of these issues beyond their technological aspects. This course meets the STS Capstone requirement.
STS 301: What is Science & Technology Studies (STS)? This course aims to help orient students to the study of and careers related to STS. Weekly presentations by different STS-affiliated faculty on foundational works in STS, along with their own scholarship. Two article-length readings per session, plus a required Canvas discussion forum. Enrollment is restricted to graduate-level students. This course is required for students completing the STS Graduate Certificate.
