MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Yongsun Paik, Ph.D.

It is my great pleasure to update you on the achievements of the LMU Center for International Business Education (CIBE) during fall 2020. Despite the impact of the pandemic, CIBE continued to offer high quality programs to serve the needs and interests of students, faculty and the business community in carrying out its mission to increase and promote the nation’s capacity for international understanding and competitiveness. CIBE will continue to spearhead efforts to advocate for the university’s mission to cultivate a “globally imaginative” campus. World Trade Week

LMU CIBE co-sponsored the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce World Trade Week (WTW) virtual conference on Sept. 22. CIBE funded scholarships for five faculty and 21 students to attend. The event on "Fueling Innovation and Economic Growth" featured Borge Brende, president of the World Economic Forum; Kimberly Reed, president and chair of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; and other industry experts. For more than 93 years, WTW Southern California has been the most extensive and unique program of its kind in the country, actively promoting the positive aspects of international trade that are vital to a strong local and national economy. LMU senior Amanda Meegan received the 2020 WTW Scholarship, given to students who have established a clear pathway toward careers related to global trade. More

International Business Lecture Series

In collaboration with the Center for Asian Business and in order to promote the nation’s capacity for international understanding and competitiveness, CIBE provides year-round lectures for the LMU community. Each event has helped our students gain a deeper understanding of the global marketplace. View the lectures here.

Nonresident senior fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center and Center for East Asia Policy at the Brookings Institution presented "The Crisis in US-China Relations: Politics, Economics, and the Threats to Regional Stability."

Tobias Schoenherr, Ph.D.

Hoagland-Metzler Professor of Purchasing and Supply Management at Michigan State University presented “The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Global Supply Chain Management: Current Status and Future Prospects.”

Mylen Yamamoto Tansingco

Founder of Cropmade, a thriving global Certified B Corporation presented “Scaling a Small Business: A Balancing Act of Profitability and Sustainability.”

Global Talent Managment Conference

CIBE held the virtual Global Talent Management Conference on Nov. 12 moderated by LMU Professor of Management Charles Vance. University researchers and experienced practitioners examined the needs and opportunities for American firms to develop more inclusive policies and practices for building and utilizing their human talent to increase their global competitiveness. The conference welcomed over 64 attendees from 10 countries. More

CIBE Faculty Research Presentations

CIBE provides internal grants to LMU faculty to support research, curriculum development and registration for conference presentations aligned with CIBE’s mission: “to increase and promote the nation’s capacity for international understanding and competitiveness.” CIBE awarded research funding to three faculty members who presented their research at a special event on Jan 22:

Alex Glosenberg, assistant professor of management: “Testing Personal Initiative (PI) Training Among ‘Underdog’ Entrepreneurs in the United States"
Sohvi Heaton, assistant professor of management: “The Effect of Inward FDI on US innovation: ‘Dracula effects’?”
Julian Saint Clair, associate professor of marketing: “War and Peace: The Effect of Trade War (De-) Escalation on Identity-Based Consumer Behavior”

Madhu Viswanathan, Ph.D.

LMU Marketing Professor Madhu Viswanathan was named the 2021 recipient of the William L. Wilkie “Marketing for a Better World” Award, presented by the American Marketing Association (AMA). This prestigious award honors marketing thinkers who have significantly contributed to the understanding and appreciation for marketing’s potential to improve our world, and from whose work notable advances have ensued. student spotlight

Amanda Meegan '21

LMU senior Amanda Meegan was a recipient of the 2020 World Trade Week Southern California Scholarship, given to students who have established a clear pathway toward careers related to global trade. Amanda also completed a very rewarding internship in Global Investments at the California Governor’s Office. Amanda is pursuing a degree in marketing with a concentration in data analytics. More

faculty publications

Li Dai, Ph.D.

LMU Associate Professor of Management Li Dai published an article in the Journal of World Business titled "International Diversification of Family-Dominant Firms: Integrating Socioemotional Wealth and Behavioral Theory of the Firm." The article draws on the behavioral theory of the firm to shed light on an extant debate about whether family firms are more or less likely to diversify internationally. Read the article here.

CIBE Funded Internships

Our students gain exposure in their chosen fields, establish critical networking connections, and build impressive resumes through valuable internship experiences. CIBE supports LMU students by providing resources and supplemental funding for international business related unpaid or underpaid internships. More

International Business Society

The International Business Society brings students together who are interested in global business to advance knowledge about international markets and business practices. "I think it is very important for college students to open their minds to the rest of the world, and it becomes especially important in the realm of business," said junior Rossten Nakamura, co-president of the International Business Society along with senior Noel Womack-Henderson.

On Nov. 20, the International Business Society welcomed its first guest speaker, Marisela Caraballo DiRuggiero, director of trade development at the Port of Los Angeles. DiRuggiero shared highlights of her career in international business and discussed internship opportunities at the Port of Los Angeles.
