Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Black Independence Day, or Jubilee Day, celebrates the end of slavery in the United States in 1865. Slavery in the American South ended after the Civil War on June 19, 1865. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified on December 18, 1865, abolished slavery throughout the entire United States. In 2020, legislation was passed in New Jersey to observe Juneteenth as a state holiday. Learn more about Juneteenth by reviewing our University Library Resources.

As a Catholic community of encounter and accompaniment, we keep in our thoughts and our prayers the members of our community who celebrate this June, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month, a time to remember the many achievements and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. June was chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, when the police “Public Morals Squad” raided gay and lesbian bars. Resistance to the violence grew into large demonstrations for LGBTQ+ rights and the uprising is considered a catalyst for the Gay Liberation Movement, fueling LGBTQ+ activism in the United States.
