Hispanic Heritage Month will continue until October 15. In 2023, the theme is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America. The month-long initiative will include virtual highlights of members of the Seton Hall community, academic and artistic work, as well as events that explore the diversity of Latin American descent, history, food, music, and more!

Global Diversity Awareness Month
October is Global Diversity Awareness Month which promotes respect toward various cultures. Within October there are many other celebrations towards that goal:

Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated in the United States during the month of October. In 1992, Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) promoted this month to build understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation and enrichment of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States. The Filipino League at Seton Hall (FLASH) is a minority student organization whose main objective is to educate the community, both inside and outside Seton Hall University, about Filipino culture. Come to FLASH's Meet the Kapamilyas GBM on October 4 where they will introduce their lineages and show why FLASH is truly a family. All are welcome.

German-American Heritage Month celebrates German-American heritage and commemorates the founding of Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1683. Slavic Movie Night is October 5. the Slavic Club will be showcasing two short, animated movies: Crocodile Gena and Cheburashka, and The Old Man and the Sea based on Ernest Hemingway's book of the same name.
- Polish-American Heritage Month is a national Celebration of Polish History, Culture and Pride.

Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month is celebrated by proclamation of the President and Congress in the United States to honor the achievements and contributions of Italian immigrants and their descendants living in the United States, particularly in the arts, science, and culture. October 16 is our Italian Studies Scholarship Event, October 18 is the Alberto Institute Book Club and October 25 is the Alberto Italian Studies Institute book presentation by Professor Gabriella Romani and David Yanoff.

In his talk “Rehumanizing International Students on Campus,” Dr. Santiago Castiello, Assistant Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy, will discuss his work on the experiences of international students on campus. Let’s come together to discuss how we can actively contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate environment for international students on October 12 in the Campus Inclusion Room at 2:00 p.m. Please register for this event.

Times have been especially trying the last few years with the prevalence of anxiety, stress, and depression rising.

Administrators, faculty, and staff are welcome to join on October 12 for a discussion around mental health with Clayton Davis, Cigna’s Behavioral Clinical Strategist for New York and New Jersey. He will provide an overview of the spectrum of resources available and where each resource can be used best. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which was declared by the United States Congress in 1988 to raise awareness of the employment needs and contributions of individuals with disabilities. Americans observe this month by recognizing the accomplishments of the people with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunity for all. Disability, Awareness, and Accessibility at Seton Hall [DAASH] has its next General Body Meeting on October 16.

October 6 (sundown) to October 8 (sundown): Shemini Atzeret is a Jewish holiday also known as The Eighth (Day) of Assembly. It takes place the day after the Sukkot festival, where gratitude for the fall harvest is deeply internalized.

October 7 (sundown) to October 8 (sundown): Simchat Torah is a Jewish holiday that marks the end of the weekly readings of the Torah. The Torah is read from chapter one of Genesis to Deuteronomy 34 and then back to chapter one again in acknowledgment of the words of the Torah being a never-ending cycle.

HolaFest is a cultural event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in South Orange and Maplewood. The event includes several local food trucks, local restaurant offerings and specials, and a full array of music and performances on the main stage, located at the corner of Fairview Avenue and Irvington Avenue. Additionally, there will be free face painting and an interactive art project for the public along Irvington Avenue. This event is sponsored by South Orange Seton Village on Oct 14, 2023 at 4 p.m.

South Orange Community Day is Saturday October 8. This annual event showcases businesses, volunteer organizations, and local government to all residents. During this fantastic event, we also warmly welcome our new residents by hosting a meet and greet event within the Community Day event. This event is hosted by the Community Relations Committee (CRC) on half of the Township of South Orange Village. The event will be held outdoors around the Skate House at Meadowland Park. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to the South Orange Public Library.

Lionel Hampton Big Band Concert will be featured in concert again this season by Jazz ‘n the Hall. In this concert, highly talented college-aged student Jazz musicians will perform alongside the Grammy award-winning members of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. Co-Sponsored by The Seton Hall University Arts Council and SOPAC on October 31.
