Summer Meal Programs Off to an Early Start
Since schools are closed, many meal sites are already open and serving no cost meals to children 18 and younger, and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old.
Families can still use these three tools to find a meal site:
- Visit www.SummerFood.org to access an interactive meal site map
- Text FoodTX or Comida to 877-877 for a list of the three closest meal sites
- Call 211 to speak to a live operator
Check the tools daily for updates as site locations and times may change. Contact the meal site for additional information and to ensure they are open and serving meals.
The TDA Farm Fresh Initiative will not be hosting a Summer Farm Fresh Challenge this year. However, we encourage Summer Meal sites to engage with local producers and distributors to incorporate local foods into meals. Remember to consider seasonal produce when meal planning. Farm Fresh resources such as the Seasonality Wheel and Harvest of the Month can help!
If you are a Food Service Director and are having trouble meeting vegetable or fruit meal pattern requirements for your program, please reach out to FarmFresh@TexasAgriculture.gov and we will work to connect you to a Farm Fresh Network member that may be able to supply food to your program.
