Stories of GratitudeI want to share a few important highlights from my address at our Fall Opening Convocation on August 19. These highlights are remarkable displays of gratitude, one of our enduring values.
I shared the heartfelt story of Zak Malitz, a 32-year-old Ball State student who passed away last August, and couldn’t take his rightful place among our graduates at the May 2022 Commencement. Zak’s father, Roger Malitz, was a cellist who taught in our School of Music before his own death 20 years ago. Zak’s mother, Deb Malitz, wanted to create a new scholarship fund that would support the passions of her husband and their son. We are grateful for such generosity. In the midst of discussions, we learned that Zak loved his time at our University—and that Ms. Malitz wished he could have completed his degree before he died.
After determining that Zak had the credits he needed to graduate, we awarded him a posthumous degree. It was my pleasure to present Deb with Zak’s posthumous degree during our Fall Opening Convocation.
I also talked about a campus conversation session with faculty and staff. In April, I met at 6 a.m. in Worthen Arena with the women and men who work the third shift—from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. I told our colleagues how much all of us appreciate that, while we sleep, they work all night to clean our classrooms and our offices. A few days later, I received a “thank you” card personally signed by all of these hard-working women and men.
Another highlight from Fall Opening Convocation was when I presented the President’s Medal of Distinction to Annie Burns-Hicks—a Ball State graduate who is a pioneering Black educator and champion of civil rights in Indiana.
Ms. Burns-Hicks graduated from Ball State Teachers College in 1958. When she returned home to Hammond, Indiana, to teach, she was informed by school officials that the city “wasn’t ready for a colored teacher.” Ms. Burns-Hicks sued the school district in federal court and won a legal battle to become Hammond’s first Black teacher in 1960. Her hiring paved the way for Hammond’s first Black police officer, the first Black firefighter, and the first Black school trustee.
Earlier this year, Hammond school officials approved the renaming of Maywood Elementary—where Ms. Burns-Hicks attended school and taught for more than 40 years—as the Annie Burns-Hicks Elementary School.
Ms. Burns-Hicks overcame extraordinary obstacles to pursue her passion of becoming a teacher. She is an enduring source of inspiration. For that, all of us are grateful.
I encourage you to learn more about these stories and other highlights of this year’s Fall Opening Convocation by viewing the recorded event online, if you were unable to attend or watch it live.

Miller College of BusinessIndiana Communities Institute Lends Helping Hand to HELP
At a recent statehouse event, Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch launched the second Hoosier Enduring Legacy Program (HELP) cohort, including Daviess County, Dubois County, and the City of Vincennes.
HELP is an initiative of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) in partnership with Ball State University, Indiana University, Ivy Tech Community College, and Purdue University. It aims to build capacity within participating communities while helping them be strategic in maximizing American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. The Indiana Communities Institute (ICI) recently conducted forums in the first cohort communities: Auburn, Jay County, and Kosciusko County. ICI will soon lead training and project planning to pursue quality of place initiatives as part of one of the four focus areas.
In addition, the three communities in the second cohort launched their months-long process with the ICI Community Development Course in July before working with ICI experts to build a diverse team, help conduct a forum, and consider quality of place issues and opportunities. A third cohort will launch in January.
As part of the Miller College of Business, ICI harnesses Ball State's talent and resources to help Indiana towns, cities, and counties address 21st Century economic development challenges.
