On Sunday, May 25, NYU Shanghai’s Class of 2025 walked across the stage at NYU Shanghai’s New Bund campus in the University’s ninth commencement ceremony. Over 400 graduating seniors hailing from 44 countries, including 226 Chinese students from 25 provinces across China, received bachelor’s degrees from NYU and diplomas from NYU Shanghai.

NYU Shanghai held its sixth graduate convocation on May 24 to celebrate the graduation of 146 PhD and Master’s degree candidates from 11 programs. Over 400 family members and friends attended the convocation, held on NYU Shanghai’s New Bund campus quad.

Words of Wisdom for the GradsNYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman, and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen shared their good wishes and passed on words of advice for the graduating class. This year’s commencement speaker, world-renowned pianist Kong Xiangdong, encouraged the graduates to think of themselves as “composers” of their own lives.

Student Speakers NYU Provost Georgina Dopico introduced Sam Kominowski and Shao Yanrui, who addressed the Class of 2025 together. At the Degree Awarding Ceremonies, the three deans spoke, along with student speakers Elisabeth Cabanas Monfort, Travis Liu Tanruizhi, and Xu Zihan.

At the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 24, NYU Shanghai leadership conferred outstanding graduates with academic honors, including the NYU Shanghai Excellence Award, Latin Honors, Major Honors, and Dean’s Awards. Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen awarded Huang Leqian with the Provost’s Award.

Congratulations to this year’s outstanding scholarships and fellowship winners. Among them, Sam Kominowski was named a Yenching Scholar, Doris Zhang Yuxuan was named an Erasmus Mundus Scholar, Caitlin McMahon was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, and Mateo Rengifo Orozco was awarded a Princeton in Asia fellowship.

Commencement Weekend CelebrationsOn Friday, May 23, members of the Class of 2025 met at Shanghai’s iconic Pearl Tower at dusk to witness the tower lit up in purple in honor of NYU Shanghai. The next day, the Class of 2025 celebrated at Grad Alley, a lively street fair organized in collaboration with the New Bund community, featuring live performances, local vendors, and the lighting of the New Bund Center.
