   TEXAS LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS   
Six UNT doctoral students were selected for the inaugural Texas Leadership Research Scholars Program that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board launched in Fall 2024 to support high-achieving graduate students. 
UNT is one of only nine public universities in Texas chosen to participate. Congratulations to Garrett Cayce, Araceli Herrera Mondragon, Celeste Ortega-Rodriguez, Christian Quintero, Jose Robledo and Emma Wimberg! Each scholar represents a different area of research.    HAPPY JUNETEENTH   
Thursday, June 19, is Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1, 1863, enslaved African Americans in Texas didn’t learn they were free until June 19, 1865. Today, Juneteenth is a federally recognized holiday celebrated in communities across the country.
UNT will be closed for business on this day. Here are a few events happening in North Texas this week:

If you need to meet with an advisor soon, remember that many colleges on campus offer in-person and virtual drop-in advising, with no appointment needed. Availability varies by college, so check your advising office’s website or Navigate for the latest schedule.

   SUMMER 2025 GRADS   
The deadline for summer graduation is this week! Undergraduate students must submit their graduation application by Friday, June 20. Graduate students (master’s and doctoral) must apply by Friday, June 27. Applications are submitted through your MyUNT account.
UNT does not conduct commencement ceremonies during the summer; however, students approved by the deadline may participate in the Fall 2025 Commencement ceremonies Dec. 12-14.

Warm, sunny days are getting longer as the official start of summer approaches. The summer solstice arrives Friday, June 20, bringing the longest day of the year north of the equator. In terms of daylight, this day has 4 hours and 19 minutes more sunlight than the winter solstice!

Don’t forget the 5W2 summer session starts Monday, June 23! For those who need to add or swap a class section, you have until Wednesday, June 25. 
If you’re currently enrolled in a summer course, grades will be posted on your transcript July 30.
