March 2018 | A monthly publication of the National Speech & Debate Association

Dear Student,

Below we share a recap of National Speech and Debate Education Day, camp scholarship opportunities, and how your peers are using their speech and debate skills to advocate for national policy change.

Meet Award Winner Brandon Schloss

As part of our celebration of National Speech and Debate Education Day, we announced the recipient of the 2018 Exemplary Student Service Award. Congratulations to Brandon Schloss from Wellington High School in Florida! Brandon was selected by a panel of National Student of the Year Award recipients for his work with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Gang Prevention Unit, his experience as an ambassador for the National Campaign to Stop Violence, and for his efforts with Stomp Out Bullying to raise awareness about bullying and cyberbullying prevention.
"When students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High debated gun control in class last November, they never imagined they were preparing to lead a national discussion on how to prevent school shootings. What really explains the students’ poise, said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie, is the school district’s system-wide debate program that teaches extemporaneous speaking from an early age."
