HOUSE VOTES ON HEREOS ACT TODAY
The U.S. House of Representatives is voting today on its Heroes Act, a proposal for a fourth coronavirus relief bill totaling roughly $3 trillion. While the legislation does not provide a significant increase in funding levels for university research, the top highlights for research in the Heroes Act include:
- $4.721 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- $125 million for the National Science Foundation (NSF)
- $400 million for the Census Bureau to account for COVID-19 related costs to the 2020 Census
- $50 million for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Additionally, the legislation provides private colleges and universities for some portion of the $8.4 billion from the U.S. Department of Education "to defray expenses they have incurred in responding to the pandemic."
