Dearincoming Public Health major 

Classes start next Thursday, September 24th! Most discussion sections do not meet during Week 0 so check your Canvas site to see whether you should go to class if you have a DI section.

We are so excited to see you this Fall, and are looking forward to getting to know you (better)! This is our (massive) Fall e-mail, packed with information, opportunities, and events for you. 

What's in this e-mail? 

Advising info, important links, the opportunity to participate in shaping how AI is used in our school, a job opportunity, and BSPH/campus events for the quarter.

As always, visit the BSPH Advising page for detailed information about making an appointment (released weekly on Wednesdays), a calendar including drop-in hours, and a link to submit forms. If you are a new student this year and have not already done so, please complete our Orientation modules, found on the New and Prospective Students tab, before making an appointment or coming to drop-in hours. No new students will be confirmed for an appointment until they have completed the Orientation modules. We will be offering drop-in hours ONLY for Weeks 0 and 1 of the quarter. Appointments will resume during Week 2. 

New transfer students should plan to meet with an advisor for long-term planning by mid-November. New first year students should plan to meet with an advisor for long-term planning by mid-February.

New this year! We'll be offering in person walk-in degree checks (primarily for graduating seniors) starting Week 4, and we will have a new system for requesting updates to degree audits (more on that later).

For quick questions, we strongly encourage you to utilize the Virtual Advising Center. As a reminder, absolutely no e-mails to the advising team will be answered; you will be redirected to the VAC. Typical response time for VAC messages is 1-3 business days. Please remember that we do not typically work evenings or weekends, so if you send a message after hours on Friday you may not receive a response until Wednesday.

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency's CASPER team urgently needs student volunteers for tomorrow, Saturday, 9.19 from the hours of 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

This CASPER addresses community concerns about exposure to pollution from the Tijuana River and estuary, from untreated sewage and industrial waste flowing northward from Mexico into the US near the South Bay communities above.

Volunteers will be assigned to census tracts in the above areas in groups of 2 to 3. Volunteers will go door-to-door in their assigned and administer a 15-minute questionnaire in English or Spanish, with the goal of 7 households per tract.

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science (HWSPH) welcomes students, staff, and faculty on Monday, September 22nd from 11 am - 1 pm on the School of Medicine Lawn! Meet King Triton!!!

Did you know that the BSPH has our own Instagram where we advertise events, provide public health-related information, and even run contests and giveaways? The account is student-run and posting will resume next week. Follow us at @bsph_ucsd!

Degree Audits are now available in TSS; however, we are aware of a number of global issues affecting Public Health students. 

If you took FMPH classes or had exceptions made in your degree audit prior to the TSS switchover, please be patient with us as we try to resolve the current degree audit problems with the programmers. If you took a PH 91 or 191 class over the summer or are taking the class in the Fall, please be patient, as we will automatically be bringing the classes into your degree audit during the Fall quarter.

However, if you have another degree audit issue, please use the new Degree Audit Update form to request an update to your audit (please DO NOT use the VAC; we will redirect you to the form). Please note that processing of degree audit updates will not begin until partway through the Fall quarter and may take 4-6 weeks or more.

The BSPH, in partnership with the Public Health Career Advisor and his team, will be hosting our annual Graduate School in Public Health Panel this Fall, and YOUR input is needed! Please fill out this survey to shape this year's panel.

As part of HWSPH’s Strategic Plan Refresh, the School is conducting a survey of HWSPH faculty, staff, and students regarding their current and planned use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom and for research.

BSPH students are invited to share their feedback by completing this survey by October 7.
