Final Four: Who Will Take Home the 2015 James Tyree Award at Next Week's Annual Meeting?
The James Tyree Emerging Business Leadership Award is, in my opinion, one of the best things we do for the business community as a Chamber each year. We are not only rewarding small business leaders for growing successful, innovative companies; we are recognizing them for doing it the right way - incorporating philanthropy and charitable involvement.
The recipient of the award will be announced at the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 9, at Navy Pier. The winner receives $25,000 in cash, compliments of Mesirow Financial, and valuable business services from the Chicagoland Chamber.
We received more than 70 applications from a wide variety of industries for this year’s Tyree Award, far more than ever before. The top 20 candidates were narrowed to 12 during an exciting, Shark Tank-style live pitch event at Mesirow Financial in April, then narrowed to four by a panel of judges in May.
We are excited to announce the finalists for the 2015 James Tyree Emerging Business Leadership Award:
Andrea Sreshta
Co-Founder and CEO
LuminAID
Andrew Lutsey
Co-Founder and CEO
Local Foods
Brian Leonard
CEO
Cardio Partner Resources
Neil Byers
Owner
Horse Thief Hollow
The presentation of the James Tyree Award is only part of the fun of our Annual Meeting, which will also feature the launch of the Chamber’s new brand and the release of our 2015 Member Survey results. Please join us for one of the most action-packed mornings of the year.

Sincerely,

Theresa E. Mintle

Internships: Crucial to our Success and Chicago’s Future Workforce
Thank you to (left to right) Stephanie Spata, Events; Garbine Martinez, International; Ryan Coolidge, Chamber Foundation; Genta Mecolli, Government Affairs; Patricia Murray, President’s Office; and Bridget Miles; SBDC. (Not pictured: Mercedes Vazquez, IT; Alina Birenyte, Accounting; Karina Estrada, President’s Office; and Olivia Fowler, Membership).
For all of the interns who have helped out at the Chamber over the past year, we have two words: THANK YOU.
Almost all professionals at one time or another have held an internship position, an experience that can vary greatly depending on the situation. Here at the Chamber, our interns aren’t fetching coffee or organizing files; they are contributing directly to our success as an organization, and we want to make sure we publicly recognize them for that.
Chamber Foundation Summer Internship Initiative
The Chicagoland Chamber has recently galvanized our emphasis on internships, both here in our office and in the community. Through the Chamber Foundation, we are launching a pilot internship program this summer with our member CompTIA, an IT industry associate that leads the State’s IT STEM Learning Exchange working with Chicago Public Schools. This year, the Foundation will be funding 10 interns, and placing four more, as part of the Early College STEM Schools (ECSS) program aimed at providing graduates with the skills they need in the modern workforce with a focus on information technology.
High school juniors will be placed in positions with some of our Small Business Development Center clients, and two interns will be housed at the Chamber for SBDC clients that do not have an external office.  These are paid internships, creating a win/win for our SBDC clients and the students themselves, who are gaining valuable real-world work experience.
Down the road, we plan to develop programming that connects our members to meaningful intern opportunities and students (including those at the college and even vocational level) to meaningful work-based learning experiences.

Theresa E. Mintle Addresses CHRO Leadership Summit

In keynote remarks to the CHRO Leadership Summit, Chicagoland Chamber President and CEO Theresa E. Mintle shared her insight into the Chicagoland region’s unique opportunities for economic growth through the lens of the Chamber’s initiatives in human capital and workforce development.
Mintle discussed how the Chamber’s recent surveys of the region’s small business and mid-market communities support evidence of the growing talent gap and skills shortage facing many companies today. She also expanded on what the Chamber is doing to address these issues, including programs in workforce development, STEM internships, talent development and retention, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
