What a year! And what a result! Despite the second year of a global pandemic, FWSF was able to adapt and persevere to provide the quality, programming, and services that we have in the past. This is all thanks to the tireless efforts of our board, committee members, and supporters. Some highlights include:
- Scholarships – In 2021, we awarded scholarships totaling $170,000 to 13 recipients, conducting interviews online. The implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion recommendations resulted in an approximate 48% increase in qualified applicants and improved representation of applicants and recipients of previously underrepresented groups. We also initiated an Ally program that provides one-year of mentorship to scholarship runners-up.
- Fundraising – We raised a record-breaking $600,000 through the efforts of our fundraising team, led by Kathleen Nielsen, and our Financial Woman of the Year Jenny Johnson.
- Membership – We developed an improved Members Corner on the FWSF website that offers such benefits as the Member Directory, Job Opportunities, Event Recording Library in case you missed past events, and more.
- Programs – Throughout the pandemic, we continued to deliver quality programming that reflected the interests of the FWSF membership. A new feature was developed to send event recordings to registrants following the event in case they missed some portion of the event or wished to view it again.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) – We continuously sought to raise awareness within FWSF, such as with the Anti-Asian Hate Awareness presentation with speaker Assemblyman David Chiu. Externally, we provided thought leadership through DEI events such as Removing Barriers in Hiring Practices and Disability Visibility.

FWSF Distinguished Member of the Year
Congratulations to Kathleen Nielsen!
In this pandemic year when we really didn’t know what our fundraising results would be, Kathleen hit it out of the park with our record-breaking fundraising total of over $600,000. Behind the scenes, she worked tirelessly to manage relationships with sponsors and help the novice FWOTY Co-Chairs navigate a challenging year during COVID. The hybrid event format was Kathleen’s brainchild too!
In addition, Kathleen wore multiple hats during the year, such as being an active guiding member of the DEI committee. Kathleen never fails to deliver, maintaining amazing equilibrium and grace.
Congratulations also to our two finalists. Shay Phillips is at the forefront of the quality, original and educational programming delivered over the last two years by our DEI team. Longtime member and leader Anne Chambers persevered to secure Condoleezza Rice as a speaker for a premier “member only” event that enriched our member benefits, sponsor benefits, branding, and thought leadership.

Introducing The Ambassador Program
Are you active on social media? Would you like to support FWSF in a quick and fun way?
If your friends joke that you’re becoming the next big influencer, you may be just who we are looking for to share more about FWSF on your favorite social media platform…and get great perks in return!
We want to recruit 12 Social Media Ambassadors for the first quarter of 2022. Ideally, we’ll have three Ambassadors for each of our four platforms: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Each Ambassador will be responsible for posting and engaging on one platform. You can choose which platform you prefer to “own.”
Ambassador duties are simple: like and share specific posts (we’ll send you a short email with a link to the post which will make this easy work!), engage with commenters, and start conversations in the comments in a friendly way.
We’re hoping to find Ambassador candidates who see this as “no work at all” but as connecting their social media audiences to FWSF’s posts and organization in a fun way.
Ambassadors will receive gift cards and be entered into a raffle for a surprise gift at the end of the year. Feel like we’re speaking to you? Reach out and contact Olivia Barbee, VP of Communications, at jpeters7@mac.com and we’ll see about getting you signed up for Q1 2022!
