Advice to help your student begin at Denison.
Denison
July 2019
A warm hello from “the Hill” to our Denison family!
Summertime on the Academic Quad
Welcome to Denison — we’re excited to welcome you and your student to our family! Several times a year, we will share events, timelines, and information that can help you support and guide your student during the next four years. Let’s get started!
Move-in Day
Move-In Day for the Class of 2023 is Sunday, August 25. (See detailed arrival information here.)
Students should plan to arrive and move into their designated residence hall in the following order:
  • Last names A-H arrive from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
  • Last names I-O arrive from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
  • Last names P-Z arrive from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Open check-in is from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
A complete schedule for Move-in Day will be mailed to students during the first week of August.
Move-in Day is exciting and busy. Here are a few tips from Owen Crum ’20, a former Community Advisor (CA) with experience working in a first-year residence hall.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff - You’ve just arrived at Denison and are probably feeling all different types of emotions. Moving in can be a lot, but don’t forget to breathe and relax. It takes time to settle in; it won’t happen all at once.
  • Enjoy every moment - Move-in is just as big for residents as it is for parents. As much as Denison students love to be autonomous thinkers, residents should remember to savor the first memories of college with their parents. Families can cherish the moment and be proud of how bittersweet this momentous occasion is.
  • Ask for help - CAs have been preparing for weeks to help residents make their first transition to Denison. Likewise, the Denison Athletes are on hand to help with the Move-in day lifting. Everyone on campus is thrilled to be a part of this time, take advantage of the help we all want to provide!
We hope you will join us for the Move-In Day Family Reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the third floor of Slayter Hall. This is an opportunity to take a break and mingle with President Adam Weinberg, Dean of First-Year Students Mark Moller, and several other college administrators. This is a casual gathering, so come as you are.
First-Year Induction Ceremony
Class of 2023 Induction Ceremony
At 7 p.m. on Move-in Day, Denison welcomes the Class of 2023 at the Induction Ceremony. We encourage parents and families to enjoy this special moment before saying farewell to their students at 8 p.m. This event will be live-streamed.
August Orientation
August Orientation is required for all first-year and transfer students. It concentrates primarily on issues of adjustment and the development of skills, both of which are critical to success in college. Aug-O begins immediately after the Induction Ceremony on Sunday, August 25, and runs through the first day of classes on Thursday, August 29. Visit the online Academic Calendar for more important dates throughout the year.
Budgeting Basics
A message from Dr. Laurel Kennedy, Vice President of Student Development
When it comes to money, you’ll want to arm your student with the best tools before they go to college — before your student is short of money, needs more, and isn’t exactly sure where it all went.
  • Budget basics - Talk through how much your student should be spending (or saving) each month, and how to track expenses
  • Use an app - One great product is the free Mint app, which assigns expenses to common budget categories, tells a user when funds get low, and has bill reminders that can prevent late fees.
  • Meal plan tracking - Nearly all of Denison’s meal plans include some number of “Flex Dollars” that can be spent at different campus dining locations. Cashiers can give “balance” information – just ask.
  • Denison Dollars - Your student can spend Denison Dollars in the bookstore and for other items on campus.
  • Student Finances - Find great information about finances, student loans, and more, at Your Finances.
Required Online Courses
Because students need to be equipped to make informed decisions about alcohol, drugs, and relationships, we require they complete a suite of interactive online courses — AlcoholEdu, Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates, and Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention — as a component of our first-year orientation. Part 1 of all of these courses must be completed by August 22. Students should have received a letter in the mail in July describing the courses and given instructions on how to complete them. If your student has any questions, they should contact the First-Year Office.
Parent Proxy System
Students can give parents or legal guardians access to their financial aid awards, personal information, student account, records, and more via the parent proxy system found in their MyDenison login. See step-by-step instructions for how to grant access to a parent/other guest. Designated proxies will need to check their email inbox soon after the student has added them. The PIN they receive will expire in five days.
Health Forms
If your student has not already turned in their health form, they need to do so as soon as possible. Each document must be less than 4 MB and in PDF format. Forms must be uploaded separately and submitted through the patient portal. To access the portal go to MyDenison > My Apps > My Wellness Portal. Please note: Students may not move into their residence on campus unless these forms have been completed and reviewed in advance by our Whisler Center for Wellness staff. If you have questions regarding the health forms, please email healthserv@denison.edu.
Suggested summer reading for family members

  • “iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy — and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood — and What That Means for the Rest of Us” by Jean M. Twenge
