NYU Shanghai undergraduates shared their work in person at the Fall 2022 Undergraduate Research Symposium held on campus November 5. Standing before classroom-sized audiences, they introduced research on a diverse range of topics, including realtime AR performance enhancement, emojis as social media sentiment indicator, “coming out” strategies, and a redefinition of the neighborhood concept.

On November 8, the NYU Shanghai-ECNU Center on Global History, Economy, and Culture (GHEC) held a lecture on "US-Soviet Economic Decoupling and the Making of the Cold War." The talk was given by renowned Cold War expert Shen Zhihua, Co-Director of GHEC, Distinguished Professor of the Department of History, ECNU.

• On Thursday evening, as US Midterm election results were still coming in, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman and esteemed journalist and visiting Professor Ray Suarez sat down to discuss the recent election season. Moderated by Dean Maria Montoya, the panel covered topics ranging from the importance of the Gen Z vote, to how the media crafts political narratives and how students can try to find credible sources, to the potential impact the Midterm elections might have on international relations and global policy issues.

The NYU Shanghai Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with NYU Shanghai Laboratories, is now offering all students a platform where safety-related concerns or ideas can be expressed in video format in order to promote safe behaviors both on and off campus. Not only is this an opportunity for you to showcase your media skills but also a chance to positively impact our community and win prizes. There is also a chance that we nominate exceptional works for a city or national level of competition. Many people who are living with HIV have mental health comorbidities that increase their risk of suicide. Liu Yuming, a Research Associate from the Center for Global Health Equity, and visiting Master of Science in Public Health student from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health published her first peer-reviewed correspondence in Lancet HIV. Liu and her colleagues highlighted that integrating mental health and HIV services provides an opportunity for more equitable and targeted health services to enhance mental well-being and prevent suicide among people with HIV.
"Suicide prevention among people living with HIV and at risk of HIV should be a priority to reduce the disproportionate suicide risk and an opportunity to introduce collaboration across sectors," said Liu.

NYU Shanghai Students Explore Museums
On November 5, 19 NYU Shanghai students from China, the US, Ghana, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Brazil enjoyed their time at the Shanghai Foreign-educated Chinese Museum exploring the history of Chinese students studying abroad and international students studying in China. On the same day, they also visited the Guangfulin Relics Park to learn about local history. The trip was organized by the Study Away Program of the Office of Student Life.

JYB.cn and People.cn reported that Chancellor Tong Shijun attended and presented at the Fifth Hongqiao International Economic Forum of the 2022 China International Import Expo.
