Spotlight on Research 
Recent R01 recipient, Dr. Oliver McDonald, Assistant Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, shared some thoughts with the PMI grants team on his newly funded grant, "The evolution of PGD addiction in Human Pancreatic Cancer."  Here, Dr. McDonald discusses key insights, lessons learned on the application process, as well focus of his R01 project.

Common Mistakes on NIH applications
Select NIH study section members offer a video outlining common mistakes seen on NIH applications. Special emphasis on biosketches, with strong attention to personal statement and productivity among other items, are discussed.

"Basic Experimental Studies with Humans Required" FOAs
The Office of Sponsored Programs recently posted a reminder regarding NIH "Clinical Trial Not Allowed," "Clinical Trial Required," and "Basic Experimental Studies with Humans Required" FOAs.  NIH has provided a comparision chart to help differentiate.

Requesting an NIH Awarding Component or Study Section?
VUMC Office of Sponsored programs reminds those applicants wishing to request a particular awarding component (NIH Institute or Center) or study section, should complete the PHS Assignment Request Form. Requests should not be included in the cover letter, per NOT-OD-16-008Particular attention should be paid to which NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) participate in the announcement.

  Internal 
Pilot and Feasibility Grants for Research Related to Diabetes and Obesity The Vanderbilt Diabetes Center, Vanderbilt Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC), and Vanderbilt Center for Diabetes Translation Research (CDTR) announce availability of Pilot and Feasibilty Grants.  Awards range from $30,000-$50,000.  Deadline: 02/04.
VUMC Faculty Research Scholars.  Up to 3 years, renewable upon satisfactory academic progress. Covers 75% of salary up to $85,000, additional resource support: $15,000.  Survey of intent: 01/15, application deadline: 02/15.
AAMC Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship Vanderbilt (VU+VUMC) may nominate one Assistant Professor for the award. $25,000 grant for a project performed in the United States to support racial and ethic minorities.  Internal applications due to LSO@vanderbilt.edu, 02/05, full application 04/05.
Vanderbilt Clinical Oncology Research Career Development Program (VCORCDP) Salary support, tuition, travel, and $5,000-$10,000 in research supplies.  Deadline: 02/29.
  Non-Limited External Opportunities      
American Heart Association 2019 Transformational Project Award  All basic, clinical, translational and population research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems. $100,000/yr including 10% indirects, for 3 years.  Deadline: 01/23.
L’ORÉAL USA For Women in Science Fellowship Program.  This program is the U.S. component of the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science International Fellowships program.  Must be in postdoctoral research position by 02/01/2019.  $60,000 (no indirects or fringe). Deadline: 02/01.
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Awards for Gene Editing for Cystic Fibrosis The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announces a Request for Applications (RFA) to identify and support highly meritorious proposals in gene editing that offer potential to repair or circumvent CFTR mutations in individuals with CF.  Awards range from $63,000 - $200,000.  Deadline: 03/15.
