• In recent months, our students have received prestigious national scholarships, including the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship, Goldwater Scholarship, Mary T. Carothers Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship, and Fulbright U.S. Student Awards. Our students’ achievements are an example of how we empower them to “Fly”—and they love it.
• Last month, Ball State students won four Emmys at the 50th annual Emmy Awards for the Lower Great Lakes Chapter in Cleveland, bringing the total number of Emmys won by faculty, staff, and students to 74.
• On July 1, the one-year anniversary of our University’s pioneering partnership with the Muncie Community Schools, MCS reached another milestone. The MCS Board of Trustees voted to hire Dr. Lee Ann Kwiatkowski as its new director of public education and chief executive officer. Dr. Kwiatkowski is an innovative educator who puts students first. With her leadership, MCS will build on the accomplishments of the past year, including more than $3 million in philanthropic investments, stabilized enrollment, and stipends for teachers and staff.
• On July 20, our University conferred approximately 1,400 degrees. Our summer graduates and their guests heard Dr. Sharon E. Paulson, professor emerita of educational psychology, speak about “The Value of Education.” Our newest alumni are poised to have fulfilling careers and to lead meaningful lives.
• In just a few weeks, we will kick off the 2019-20 academic year with the Fall Opening Convocation at 9 a.m. on August 16 in Emens Auditorium. Thanks to our faculty and staff, we had a great 2018-19. I anticipate another year of impact and achievement.
• On August 31, the Ball State football team will play Indiana University at noon in Lucas Oil Stadium. I look forward to cheering on the Cardinals during a game that promises to be an exciting home opener. For more information, visit ballstatesports.com.
