Assoc. Prof. of History Andrew Gomez is serving as Puget Sound’s faculty liaison to the Northwest 5 Consortium (NW5C) for Community Engaged Learning, which includes representatives from five private liberal arts colleges in the Northwest. NW5C is hosting a virtual summer symposium on May 15 focusing on the book The Activist Academic by Colette N. Cann and Eric J. DeMeulenaere. The event, which is funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, is open to faculty and staff and will include the authors for an in-depth discussion.

Total Eclipse of the Heart

Regina Jorgenson ’98, director of astronomy at the Maria Michell Association (MMA), spoke about the total solar eclipse visible across North America at the MMA Science Speaker Series. Jorgenson began her career in astronomy with an internship at the Maria Mitchell Observatory in Nantucket, Massachusetts while she was a student at Puget Sound.

For the first time since 2015, the Logger Women's Crew team has won the Northwest Conference Rowing Championship! The varsity 8+ boat held a steady lead throughout the 2,000-meter course to capture first place, while the 2V8+ rowers came in second to secure the championship. Sydney Maysmith ’24, Becca Murphy ’24, and Skylar Reynolds ’24 also received All-Conference honors.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Prof. of Business & Leadership Lynnette Claire with alumni Maya Mendoza-Exstrom ’03 of Seattle Sounders FC, James Oppenheimer ’14 of Columbia Hospitality, and Nani Vishwanath ’09 of REI Co-op along with time to network and share ideas about the economic future of our region.
