Alejandra's Art
"People judge me by my unibrow, but I was born with it and my parents say I look good. Kids say I should shave off my mustache but I was also born with it and I am beautiful. Kids judge my shoes and say, 'What are those, twinkle toes?' but they're just shoes!" - Alejandra, 4th grade
Teaching Resources at Streetside.org
This April, Streetside was excited to unveil a new resources page on our website. The initial release of the page features a wealth of information gathered from Streetside's four-year 21st Century Schools project which was funded through a generous grant from the US Department of Education. The project, which will conclude this June, has helped Streetside implement and evaluate our program methodology for media arts integration. The project has reached hundreds of students at elementary and middle schools in Hayward, Richmond, and San Francisco.
Jump over to www.streetside.org/resources and you'll find evaluation results, student work, detailed lesson plans, slide decks for teachers, student worksheets, and other classroom resources for educators.
We look forward to updating this page on our website as we continue to develop and share best practices for arts integration in schools and community programming.

Stop Motion at Rich Sorro
This spring, Streetside Teaching Artist Chelsea Carl’s students at Mission Housing, Rich Sorro Commons, learned how to create stop motion videos. Taking inspiration from the kind of superheroes they would like to be, students explored questions to inform their work:
What is your superhero’s name? Where are you from? What does your costume look like? What are your struggles? What are your superpowers and purpose in helping the community?
Students created paper puppets of their superhero selves with moving joints, painted their background, and went to work! They set up an iPad on a plexiglass panel, and used a Stopmotion app to bring their stories to life. Frame by frame students moved their puppets to create a moving image. When they were done, students brought their stop motion animation into iMovie to record their voice-overs and add titles.
We are excited to see these videos premiere to their family and friends at the upcoming May 2018 Rich Sorro Commons showcase!

Supporting Youth Voice
A message from Interim Executive Director, Neela Gentile
Over the last couple of months, I've had the privilege of getting to know Streetside Stories, the programs and the people. I’ve had the opportunity to watch magic happen in the classroom when a teaching artist connects with a child, when a proud student shares something deep and meaningful and when powerful stories come together through visual and media arts. I've also realized over the last few months that it's not just finding one’s voice that is so important to the youth in our program but the affirmation of being heard. If you’d like to join us for a showcase – the culmination of each workshop – please let us know.

I've also had the pleasure of talking with many Streetside supporters. In listening to their reasons for being champions of our work, I've heard their continued commitment even in the face of reduced federal funding for arts education. We are grateful for their passion. If you have a story that you'd like to share or if you'd like to hear more of our young people's stories, please check out our student gallery or better yet, call me. There is nothing I like better than meeting people who share our passion for youth voice.
-Neela Gentile, Interim Executive Director
Portrait Photos
From Streetside Staff!
At our most recent professional development session for Streetside Stories Teaching Artists, staff participated in a photography activity to prepare for their Spring workshops. While exploring their past, present and future as artists, they reviewed how to teach and model technology to students and took portrait photos in the Mission District’s Balmy Alley. We think their photos are incredible!
